The Alaska Zoo has a new, adorable attraction: Five wolf pups, refugees from the Funny River Fire.

Zoo Director Patrick Lampi says this is the first time in his 28 years at the zoo that they’ve had orphaned wolf pups in their care.

Biologists suspect their parents ran from the fire. Then, a porcupine wandered into their den trying to escape the flames.

Injured and alone, a firefighter came to the pups’ rescue. They would have died without human help.

The Alaska Zoo already has a wolf pack, so they aren't really equipped to take on five more permanently. I think there is a wolf sanctuary in Minnesota or somewhere that is interested in taking them. They are so lucky to be alive.

By the way, the fire is still growing - up to 192,000 acres now - but they consider it 46% contained, which is good news. It's drizzling and cooler, with rain expected through Tuesday, also good news. The air quality here is so much better since the rain.

Thanks for the news. I do hoe they survive the porcupine quills and that they have a safe refuge afer this part of their experience.
