Martinez called the shooting an accident, saying no one was to blame.

“The family is not trying to point the finger at anybody,” he said. “This is a tragic event that occurred. We can’t say it was my fault, it was my nephew’s fault, it was my father’s fault. It’s just a tragic event that occurred. If there was anything I could do to bring him back, God help me I would.”

No, we can says its your fault, shit-for-brains. Your father didn't bring it to a family picnic, and he didn't load it. Putting himself in the same category as his 6 year old nephew or his dead father has got to be one of the scummiest whines I've seen.

Logically, it is not his fault. But a 6-year old cannot process this logically. He will always be the person who killed grandpa. No matter how he rationalizes it later in life, everything he's feeling right now as a kid will NEVER leave him. I hope he's seeing a therapist now to help him process what happened, and at least minimize some of the damage.

Rifles are legal to hunt with but because of the hilly terrain, rifles capable of long range shots are rather impractical. Carbines, such as the .30-30 and a semi-auto AK-47 fitted with a Michigan hunting legal 5 round magazine are perfectly good choices.

1) Always assume the gun is unloaded

2)Never secure your gun

3)Feel free to point the gun at anything and everyone because, you know, the weapon is already assumed to be unloaded

4)The handling of guns is more fun when booze and drugs are being consumed. Being drunk or high makes it easier to follow rules 1, 2 and 3

Why the gun was loaded, combined with the drugs, tells me much about the family. The dead grandfather also should not have just left the gun on the table.

And should have made sure the gun was not loaded before handing it to grandpa in the first place. In fact, made sure it was not loaded before he brought it outside.

Ultimately, the owner of the gun is responsible - or irresponsible, in this case.

Avtomat Kalashnikov, or Kalash for short. One thing it is definitely not is a machine gun.

I've never considered them coll and I can't say they only belong to the military. I do say one place I believe they definitely do not belong is anywhere there are children running free or people drinking alcohol and doing drugs.

Fri May 30, 2014, 12:49 PM

first off, it's a party with booze; gun should have never come out of the house. at all.

second, you don't set a gun down on the picnic table where a kid (or anyone for that matter) can just pick it up. I've seen otherwise rational adults who were drunk find a gun and be like "ooh, look at this! and start playing with it)

and even if this idiot still did 1 & 2, why on earth didn't he eject the magazine and clear the chamber.

leaving a gun out like that is negligent enough.. but to leave it there sitting loaded?!?!? despite his gross negligence, this tragedy could have been avoided if he made sure it was empty or had a trigger lock on it.
