A conservative group trying to force a referendum on a transgender rights law scheduled to take effect this fall did not get the required signatures needed to bring the issue to a vote.
The group MDPetitions.com was attempting to get 18,500 signatures by midnight Saturday to get the issue on the November ballot, but said on its website it was about 1,000 votes shy.
"It is difficult to come this close and then fall short, and yet we know that it was only through this effort that people became aware of the effects of this bill," Washington County Del. Neil Parrott, a Republican who chairs MDPetitions.com, said in a letter on the group's website.
Parrott did not return several phone calls.

(132,367 posts)and that's where I'm registered, Hagerstown! Quite multi-racial. Haven't noticed any kkk, but will check, next time I visit. (Have an apartment there, but prolly leave it when I can get my act together.)
Here's the town park, 2 blocks from my apartment, on a recent visit:

(19,964 posts)I have to drive the length of Western Maryland every time I make a trip home to Ohio and I always appeal to any goddesses out there (just to hedge my bets) that my car won't break down in that part of Maryland. The fundie nation is strong out there. It's a shame because the countryside there is what I would consider some of the most beautiful in the country.

(132,367 posts)Yes, is quite nice, and I just drove from DC area to Dayton for a funeral. Didn't do much 'scenic' on the way out, 70 thru Cumberland to Morgantown, WV, etc., but did do scenic on the way home, rte 50, discussed in Ohio group.
I do hope to be there in next few weeks, to get some REAL strawberries at farm market I've found, in Boonsboro.
I'm not there too often now, as I rent a cottage in southern MD on the Patuxent, but my Ha'town apartment has a view of park area, and is in Ha'town's 'historic' section.
AND we did get John Delaney as our Rep, got rid of that old creep, what's his name.
