The Montreal Gazette explains that, besides widespread farmer resistance to the crop -- which is completely unnecessary, as natural alfalfa already grows heartily and steadily without the need for pesticides -- tens of thousands of Canadians have repeatedly expressed their disapproval of it. Even Quebec's union of agricultural producers, known as the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) of Quebec, has expressed strong disapproval of the crop.

(36,284 posts)...if their stock EATS genetically modified alfalfa unless the alfalfa expresses some gene product that itself contaminates the meat somehow. But simply for digesting it? That's ludicrous-- and shows the usual anti-science and ill informed hysteria of the anti-GMO movement. For pete's sake-- once in the gut, proteins are just polypeptides waiting to be digested by peptidases. There is no rational reason to deny organic certification to meat producers simply because some of those amino acids came from genetically engineered gene products. Double sheesh.
No one should be allowed to choose to eat or not eat something unless some official board determines that their decision is absolutely "science-based" and not tainted by any silly personal preference!

(1,558 posts)Inordinately high levels of cancer in the beef? As EU independent studies have supposedly claimed from certain strains of GMO corn...granted they pulled one of those strains ...and then it magically appears growing in Seattle then China and other asian pacific countries refused all corn shipped from california...this just happen this year...
Would you still complain that it is only negligible and people are being ridiculous to worry?...
I for one don't agree with intermixing genetic material into crops that nature its all it times creating stable crops and animals would never do...
I prefer my corn as it was created and cross bred through Natural and HUMAN selection and inter breeding...NOT bombarded with animal genes to create something wholly unnatural in nature...
Thats not woo thats science...eat it all the fuck you want but when they take our choice NOT to use, eat or grow their product by cornering the markets and make heirloom seed unavailable or scarce or super expensive...then you and your GMO friends will have to expect a backlash...
I obviously wont change your mind and can guarantee you can't change mine.

You may receive flak for your source link, lovian, so you may want to switch to the Montreal Gazette in order to discuss the topic rather than the source.
Of course, I'm unsure as to the veracity of the Gazette but I know for sure how natural news is viewed.

(19,362 posts)I think the other part of the article is how the Canadians are protesting GMO crops in general

(8,159 posts)Just leave alfalfa alone. Those of us that deal with it daily would rather come in contact with unmodified hay!
It works, leave it alone!
