On Thursdays episode of Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough went way over the line when discussing the situation surrounding the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, an american POW who was finally brought home after nearly five years in captivity. Apparently, Scarborough was off at the beginning of the week and this was his first opportunity to talk about the growing controversy, created solely by conservatives in the media and Republicans in Washington, over Bergdahl. What we were presented with was a disgusting display that actually put Joes recent over-the-top demonstrations to shame.
After starting off the show tossing out spurious arguments and berating the President for his decision to release the five most important members of the Taliban, Joe then ended the segment with a hateful rant where he called Bergdahl a deserter and someone who was not worth saving. In fact, he said that Bergdahl should be the last person we should concern ourselves with freeing and that he deserved to be held in captivity due to his own actions. Scarboroughs hate-filled, vitriolic rant was precipitated by comments made by panel guests Steve Rattner and Eugene Robinson. Joe told Robinson that he wasnt going to allow him to say that the detainees released may not even be a legitimate threat to the US in the future. Basically, in Joes mind, it is an absolute certainty that they are going to mastermind a 9/11-style attach on the US in the future and they should have never been released (even though they were going to have to be released, per international law, within the next year.)
This then started a discussion revolving around Bergdahls service and the possibility that he might have gone AWOL prior to being captured in 2009. Robinson wondered if anyone would have a problem with a prisoner exchange for Bergdahl if he was a war hero, rather than someone whose service record is under question. This led to Rattner saying that hed only release these detainees in exchange for someone truly important, like a Senator or Joe Scarborough (good grief!) This lit the fire under Joe to go off on Bergdahls alleged desertion. Essentially, Scarborough said that Bergdahl is a worthless human being who didnt deserve to have his country make a deal to secure his release and bring him home. Answering the question about whether his service record mattered, Joe yelled, Damn straight it matters! He then went on a tirade of embarrassing proportions, as he claimed that Bergdahl hates America, that he is responsible for six American soldiers dying because they were looking for him (a claim that has since been refuted) and that he is a deserter who should be the last person we think of getting out of that area.

(46,416 posts)it going, you have to have some people on every channel screaming "TRAITOR!! FIRING SQUAD!!!" to balance out the fact that Bergdahl is free, will quietly recover and be reintegrated. The deal is done, no one is sending Bergdahl back to the Taliban, Obama was most likely within his legal authority, and now it's just being beaten senseless as a ratings-getter.

(3,596 posts)Joe Scarborough is a has-been politician that is not known for having done anything while in Congress.
He is condescending to many guests on the show when they disagree with him. He isn't always following the Fox News or Rush Limbaugh talking points but he has them there in case he needs them because he can't think of something vile to say.
I cannot imagine Lawrence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, etc. ever speaking down on a guest. They may be very direct and don't let the guests avoid the questions/issues but they never treat them like dirt.
Joe Scumbag does it all the time.
I really don't understand why MSNBC has him in their line-up. It really doesn't make any sense other than perhaps they can point to him and say well we have our token conservative.
But he brings absolutely no value on the show.

(5,842 posts)I recall when Morning Joe was marketed/produced as the "thinking person's" morning discussion show during the time of the 2008 election.
I guess TPTB decided that it was more entertaining to have Joe blow a gasket and act like a toddler having a tantrum on a weekly basis. Amazingly, it seems the ratings haven't convinced them that this isn't the way to gain viewers.

(27,677 posts)Last time I checked, the punishment specified for violation of UCMJ Article 85 (or Article 86 depending on Bergdahls intentions) isnt to throw him to our enemies!
Ultimately, Bergdahl will have to face his accusers, and if the allegations of desertion are proven true then he will answer for the crime of desertion as specified under the Uniform Code of Military Justice which technically could include the death penalty since the desertion is alleged to have occurred during time of war and in the face of the enemy. Far more likely, of course, if Bergdahl is convicted of desertion hell probably get little more than a bad conduct discharge and forfeiture of any benefits. Its unlikely that hed see prison time and, really, how would that even be a punishment compared to what hes already been through? Likely he wont ever face a hearing and hell be administratively separated from the service at the Armys earliest possible convenience.
But, and heres the thing so pay attention, even if Bergdahl is tried and found guilty of desertion, even if hes found guilty of treason as some would have it, hell go to prison we wont give him back to the Taliban.
There is no crime so great that leaving him in the hands of our enemies is the indicated punishment. He was, he is, one of ours. Period. For better or for worse, hes one of ours, and we dont leave our people behind not even the deserters. We Americans sent him into the meat grinder and it is our sacred obligation to get him home, no matter what.

With that said, I hope security kept Joe away from the women afterwards.
