Death Throes: The Mainstream Media Is Hanging By A Thread

Activist Post
As the May ratings for the 4 major news networks come in, its never been more apparent that the mainstream media is in its death throes. According to a recent article from Politico, Fox News is faced with its lowest numbers in over a decade. While the networks continue to maintain enough viewers to stay afloat, they have absolutely failed to attain the younger demographic. Another key factor coming from May ratings is just how old Fox News viewers are. Take for example, Bill OReillys show
OReilly had his lowest month since 2001 in the key demo, with 308,000 viewers. Yes, OReilly is still the No. 1 program in cable news in both total and demo viewers, averaging 2,136,000 total viewers in May. But the majority of those viewers are over the age of 55. In fact, the median age for OReilly is now just over 72 years old. The average Fox News viewer overall is 68.8, while the average ages of MSNBC and CNN viewers were 62.5 and 62.8, respectively. Simply put, the largest news networks are hemorrhaging viewers, and most of whats left are now senior citizens. If any institution is going to survive, it of course needs younger adherents. And this is not an abnormal year.
Breitbart reported an almost identical story two years ago for the month of May. This is a clear and long-term trend of decline. And it isnt just television news of course. Print media is likely on its way out as well, with only about a quarter of the population saying they have confidence in newspapers. 152 newspapers were shutdown in 2011 alone. Though I couldnt find any more recent data, I suspect last year wasnt much better.
Honestly, its an exciting trend to me. The mainstream media has failed to inform us on so many levels. You can pick any day or week of the year, and observe the most trending news items littering our television screens. What youll find is a news media that desperately holds onto any celebrity gossip for days on end, and lies through its teeth at every opportunity. Look at what they did this week. They failed to report on the possibly earth-shaking events that could unfold from a yearly meeting of the most powerful and influential people on earth. If they cant do that, then what are they good for? The lies are the most telling of all. For most of my life, I was told that the media is only concerned about ratings. If it bleeds it leads or something to that effect. I was led to believe that a news organization would do anything for ratings, but perhaps that isnt exactly so. If all they cared about was being seen and heard, why are their ratings in the toilet?
If youre reading this right now, you probably already know. Theres a good chance youve at least partially abandoned television and print media. You know deep down that it cant be trusted. You know its not just about ratings. If numbers were all that a multi-billion dollar industry needed to survive, they could do it. Its not that hard. Just tell the truth. The world is a baffling and complicated place, teeming with mystery and beauty. Were on a rock hurdling through space with billions of people living on its surface, and not one of them is identical to another. The world is an unlimited tap of incredible technological advances, political intrigue, wild natural phenomena, and an endless parade creative and courageous people. The truth of our world is filled with awe and wonder. They could get all the ratings they could possibly dream of, if they just told the truth. And, yet, from the school textbooks of our formative years, to the talking heads of our adult lives, every source of mainstream information appears to be a sanitized version of the truth, or even an outright lie.
When I was at CNN a decade ago, it was glistening, Now, he said, it looks like Hitlers bunker
.torn-up carpet, feces all over the wall and on the floor in the bathroom. Its rotting. Folks, Ive been in those exact rooms, he added. It literally looked like a gas station bathroom in the worst part of town. It was rotting and those people were in hell. Its a skeleton of what it was, its a globalist operation and theyre nothing.
For their sake, I hope hes exaggerating. As for me, I have a pretty bad case of schadenfreude. This tired old media, this purveyor of a false reality, is a dead man walking.

(101,311 posts)Take a look at "The Daily Sheeple". Right wing nonsense, trying to sell gold and silver (it's in their heading) and survivalist gear. And "Activist Post" is full of bollocks too: 'Obamacare: watch out, here comes predictive modeling', 'Do the government and its ancillaries have ownership over your child?', a puff piece for the anti-vaccine nutter who was on The Daily Show, and a blog roll with 'Rense', ;Before It's News', 'Infowars', 'Lew Rockwell' and many more right wing nutcases.

(12,977 posts)TV news is aging and contracting. Newspapers are dying or being bought up by out-of-town conglomerates that no loner cover local stories. The American networks and papers of record are no longer bothering to maintain overseas bureaus.
The industry is sick, and if it takes a nutter to say the emperor has no clothes, that doesn't make it any less true.

As I recall, there were several threads here at DU proclaiming that Fox News viewers now have an average age of 68 -- but they all seemed to think it was some sort of coup that MSNBC views averaged "only" 62.
There's something very wrong with US media. One illustration is the fact that even here at DU a lot of people are looking to a Russian propaganda outlet like RT, or a British tabloid like the Daily Mail, for coverage of US stories that you don't hear anything about in domestic sources.
The MSM have failed us -- and if we don't want the Alex Jones's of the world to fill the void, we need a better alternative.

(59,584 posts)How much crap is out there on the internet? LOTS - Rense and Alex Jones and Debkafiles and Breitbart and Freepers and chemtrails and ZOG and Area 51 and the vaccine/autism link, and who's rocking epic sideboob - you name it. Anybody with a computer and Typepad can crank it out by the yard.
How much crap is out there on cable news? LOTS - Kardashians and the space-time continuum-warping search for Malaysia 370, and what the stars wore at the Oscars/Golden Globes/Emmys, and the "controversy" on global warming, and Casey Anthony and Nancy Grace (and the Flaring Nostrils of Justice) and the pathetic journalistic equivalent of a colostomy bag that is Leslie "Wolf" Blitzer and the dreadful, awful, horrible, pathetic failure (that wasn't) of Obamacare.
What's the difference? Well, in scenario A, it's up to the amateurs, the crackpots, the nutbags, the reality-challenged. In scenario B, it's in the hands of the professionals. And when CNN asks whether an airliner was "raptured" or if space aliens were involved, but 2.5 minutes of rapid climate collapse is "too long" (see also - Miles O'Brien and Neil Degrasse Tyson on climate reporting), WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

(6,829 posts)It's agenda driven corporate propaganda. And a substantial part of the decline is because more and more of us are becoming utterly aware of that fact.
Secondly, I think the way young people get information now is utterly different than us boomers, who grew up on black and white, 3 major networks and newspapers. They don't watch TV in real time all their entertainment is on demand and the cell phone and tablets have become their primary source of all media.
But we still have Stewart and Colbert for all of us to feel like a global village of shared info, just like back in the Walter Cronkite days.
9-11 was thirteen years ago. There is a generation that has acclimated to our post 9-11 nullification of many Constitutional rights and gloomy desperate futures. All us boomers have an obligation to both educate young people about how much better middle class American life was when we were children. And all do our utmost to try to return America to the hopes and dreams and LEVEL PLAYING FIELD we and our parents enjoyed five decades ago.

Fox Noise is useless. CNN has become almost useless. However, people are still tuning into their local TV news and are still watching the three major networks' news programs. Many are still reading their local newspapers, as well.
Mainstream media is still alive and is still what a helluva lot of people are relying on for whatever news they bother to follow.

Did the Bowe Bergdahl Story Get Michael Hastings Killed?
Could Michael Hastings have been killed by our government to shut him up?
For nearly seven decades the US Central Intelligence Agency has been the chief operating engineer and primary culprit covertly orchestrating this entire diabolical front engaging in acts of terrorism to ensure that Obamas unabashed exceptionalism in the form of an overstretched, morally bankrupt, imperialistic American Empire in decline reaches every corner of the planet.
Attorney General Eric Holder unveiled his plan to create a new Justice Department task force this week that will focus on the threat of homegrown terrorism.
The website has this anti-Bowe Bergdahl hit piece.
Of course, the corporate media sucks a horse's ass. But seriously, do we really need to give every Alex Jones/David Icke wannabe credibility? I suggest you self-delete this.
And speaking of Activist Post, the website is anti-vaccine and just as much kooky as Daily Sheeple.
