Spending $ on bombs, bad. Spending $ on roads, not bad.

(17,796 posts)I have no idea where your going with this.
Also not sure I want to be informed about the heart of darkness that is the interstate highway system.

(15,882 posts)on the moon, the schools ramped up for science, etc. And without another one, may never.
It wasn't done because rational people knew that by investing in each other we would all be richer, it was done partly out of fear and partly to make really wealthy people even wealthier..
The economy is shitty and getting worse for many, with 9 million homes underwater, most new jobs being created (home health aide is the fastest growing) will require the use of food stamps and other relief just to perform them, we haven't create any net new jobs since 2008 while we added 15 million new people, and we have about 50 million in poverty. Virtually across the board there is no improvement on paper for anyone except the Mi$$ RobMe crowd.
The answer, as it was in that part of the last century, is to invest in ourselves again, but sans a war, there is no one pushing for these things in anything but the most lukewarm manner.
And we continue to circle the drain.

(17,796 posts)definitely get a better idea of where he was coming from. I just hope you wouldn't argue that we should toss aside every advance that mankind has had that may have been influenced by dubious purposes.
If you think we are circling the drain now, try tossing aside the internet, highways, etc... and see how quick we go down the drain.

(15,882 posts)Then again, the highway bridges are falling in the rivers, and the bigger pipes through the Internet are being sold off to the highest bidder - so we might get to see that in addition to everything else.
eek.

(4,185 posts)It wasn't a (that) marginal tax rate boon that produced all those feats.

dawg
(10,632 posts)but that is irrelevant.
The reason they didn't pay the high rates is because it was preferable for them to just hire more workers instead. Everyone was much less stressed that way, all the company cars were washed, a real human answered the phone, and there was plenty of excess capacity in case something happened to require it.
In other words, instead of paying those high tax rates, the plutocrats chose, instead, to just use that money to build a middle class.

(10,632 posts)It was just preferable to reporting huge profits, 90% of which would go to taxes.

(9,799 posts)Either way though, somebody besides the 1% wins, so, yeah, raise the damn tax rates on the super rich!
It's hard to believe how successful the RW has been in demonizing the idea of paying for infrastructure and other things that benefit the community in general with tax dollars. The whole "tax is theft" meme shows how twisted their minds have become.

(332 posts)92% rate started in today's dollars at about 3.5 million and applied only to unearned income (dividends, interest, rents and royalties).
Earned income (Wages, etc.) maxed out at 70%.
Capital gains were taxed at a flat 25% (or marginal rate if lower).
