General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Vermont GOP is effectively dead. Not sleeping. Dead.
They have no money. All they can dredge up for statewide candidates are marginal people- when they dredge up anyone at all. They have a bank account of $34,000 and debts. they hold one statewide office. They're in a super minority in both Houses.
The decline has been ongoing, but at this point, the VT GOP is no longer a viable party.
Such a shame.

(23,018 posts)Or would you rather have two or more parties that are sensible and work together to get things done?
Just curious. I see what happened in VT as an eventual outcome nationwide, maybe not to that extreme, but certainly in that direction. The GOP is divided and falling apart. They can only do unreasonable things at this point and it makes getting things done impossible in the Congress given the current districting and the Democrats lack of super majority in the Senate.

The Vermont Progressive Party.

(484 posts)Not always very progressive.
All got in line, at Pat Leahy's direction, to support the F-35 boondoggle, which will render 3,000 affordable homes "incompatible with residential use", per Federal noise standards.
One Democrat from the Southern part of the state is a climate change denier (although I think he is retiring).
Vermont Democrats are like Moderate Republicans of 30 years ago, Progressives are the true standard bearers of what used to be "Democratic" values.
Just my opinion and perspective.

(11,804 posts)But it's still a step up from what we have in most places. I don't have a problem sharing the government with moderate conservatives (think they have a place actually) but too much of the Republican Party is between very right wing and insanely right wing, in which case there isn't a lot to talk about in my opinion.

(114,904 posts)The Vt House and Senate are both filled with progressive dems.
And Zuckerman became a dem.

(31,464 posts)Seriously...my favorite state in the union. Between their progressive laws, embrace of solar and wind, incredible scenery, great snowboarding, white water rafting, hiking, golfing, no laws against nudity, Bernie Sanders, Ben & Jerry's, Cabot Cheese, breweries...what's not to love. Except the damn Subarus, the official car of Vermont.

(4,858 posts)...back in the 60s...I had an great uncle and aunt in Rutland whose father voted for Lincoln, and he--the uncle--had been a Taft delegate at the famous 1952 GOP donnybrook of a convention. And I guarantee you, they would have vomited at the thought of today's Tea Party GOP...the end of that decent, conservative-with-a-small-c Yankee Republicanism is actually rather sad to me...

You did mean for your comments to speak to some larger trend, yes? Or do you mean limit your comments to "the Vermont House of Representatives"? If so, I'll have to take your word for it.
