Two years ago today, America’s Profit-Driven Health Care system killed my only son.

http://bluntandcranky.wordpress.com/2014/06/25/two-years-ago-today-americas-profit-driven-health-care-system-killed-my-only-son-warning-profanity/

"You see, he died because health insurers refused to pay for the care he needed: had they paid for it, they wouldn’t have made as much profit. He died so that millionaires can get even richer, and that’s the ONLY God-damned reason he died.

So here’s a big “Fuck You” to anyone and everyone who opposes Health Care Reform. It could have saved his life.
Here’s another one to anyone who opposes the Affordable Care Act (flawed though it is, it at least kept my boy alive a bit longer).

Here’s a big “Fuck YOU, Motherfucker” to all the legislators and pundits who are still trying to block further improvements in accountability, care, coverage and quality in our national health care system.

Simply put, if you are in favor of a health care system that is purely based on greed and profit (as America’s is and has been), then you are in favor of people dying so millionaires can get even richer. And yes, Fuck You for that.

Fuck You, John Boehner. Fuck You, Mitch McConnell. Fuck You, Aetna. Fuck You, Sam Brownback. Fuck everyone who is like you, too.

You want objectivity when my kid got killed, motherfucker? Yeah, right. If it was your kid, you’d be saying the same thing I’m saying right now. So, no, I’m not objective on this topic.

And fuck it, I don’t care. Aetna banked big bucks, their people got bonuses, and where did that money come from? It came from denying care and saving money thereby: and by so doing, killing people like my son. So fuck objectivity. Sometimes, objectivity is just a bunch of rationalized, sophist bullshit.

In closing, here’s one more “FUCK YOU, MOTHERFUCKER” FOR ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS THE POLICIES THAT KILLED MY KID.

Mr. Blunt and Cranky

P.S. Here’s a big shout-out to the President for still standing by the ACA when so many evil, greedy motherfuckers have been buying congresscritters to try and kill more people with bad insurance. And a big boot up the asses of those bought politicos."

OP is more than entitled to his anger and its expression here - and given his loss, you want to quibble with him cussing?

Personally, our healthcare system among many other aspects of our economy are CRIMINAL!

But mind your manners and go back to sleep.

21. Me too.

My son could not afford the $600 to keep his medical insurance effective while layed off from his job. He kept thinking he would be called back to work. Then he got so sick, he was afraid to go to the doctor because he said "They will send me for all types of tests, and I'll be in debt forever" Unable to keep food down, he tried baby food. Eventually he died, my doctor said it was malnutrition the autopsy missed something. Nothing can fill the space left in my heart, at the dinner table at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nothing. He was my youngest.

51. So sorry for your loss. THIS is something the ACA might have helped

BUT, someone should have pulled him aside and told him, "Being in debt is better than starving to death". We hear these stories all the time about choosing between food and medicine. Hopefully some of those decisions will be solved by these insurance mandates.

One of my biggest losses was my best friend who died of AIDS-related complications. He was a wonderful friend and man. Too bad his last partner, who is still alive, wasn't such a great person. His partner did all sorts of nasty drugs and freely had indiscriminate sexual encounters. All without the knowledge of my friend. Until my friend found out about that.

That asshole is still alive and probably still transmitting disease to others while my good friend is dead.

It has been years since Jim's death. I'm still quite bitter about Jim's suffering and passing away.

3. The ACA does not remove the profit motive.

It will not stop those things from happenings (the dragging the feet for payment, the initial denials that always seem to happen).

Since this person did not really go into details, it's hard to say whether the ACA would have helped or not.

19. +1 The ACA entrenches the profit motive by ensuring that subsidies are paid for by taxpayers

rather than the insurance corporations and by writing protection of obscene profits into the law.

And we are already seeing adjustments to enable profiteering even beyond the ostensible deductible and premium limits of the insurance plans themselves, such as Obama's new loophole that shifts even more costs from the insurers to patients.

Expect more stories like this.

80. I agree. And one of the big problems is how doctors are no longer trained in the

Art of medicine but to prescribe, prescribe and prescribe.

I spent two years being tested for every other malady under the sun. After they couldn't find any tumors or growths, they did an MRI of my brain, thinking a brain tumor there was firing off signals that caused me to believe I was in pain.

No brain tumor either.

It ended up being a wheat allergy. But between my first and last bit of testing, I am sure I brought the people at Big Medicine around 12 to 20 thousands of dollars. Luckily the Big Insurer got the bill for the tests, but still my question is: how come of the two doctors I saw, neither ever said, "Might be dietary related?"

In the end it was someone on the nursing staff that figured it all out.

Way back in the 1980's, SF Chronicle ran an article about a Stanford student who was hospitalized. In intense pain. He spent 37 days in a hospital bed before someone figured out he had appendicitis.

Modern test machinery missed that fact, but his symptoms were so clear that one of his parents' friends, a retired MD had said early on, "Son, you have appendicitis."

83. If you transform doctors into technicians who merely follow insurance company flowcharts for care,

you can justify paying them like technicians.

Ditto for gifted, creative teachers, whom the large companies seek to replace with cursorily trained TFA bots or computer programs.

The goal is *always* to suck profits to the corporate owners, the One Percent, even though they are never the ones who actually provide the services.

Skilled and educated employees of all types have learned this. Doctors will, too. We are being deliberately transformed into a nation of wage slaves for a small group of the very wealthy. Educated professionals who have ignored what's been done to teachers and other occupations will soon learn that they are not special; the oligarchs will be coming after them, too.

I am glad you had a careful and observant nurse involved in your care. We have followed our primary physician to three different practices, as he keeps leaving because they won't allow him to spend the time with patients that he knows is necessary to do his job well.

It's going to be a huge job to get the corporate corruption out of this country. The tentacles are are so broad and deep now that they penetrate every aspect of our lives.

The ACA also forces the insurers to cover people that they refused to cover previously; and lots of people are on non-profit plans (Medicaid for instance).

As I said in the OP, the ACA is flawed, but it forced my carrier to cover my son when they tried to drop him.

101. And, a big chunk of the 20% goes for administrative costs, marketing, maintaining systems, etc.

Any commissions come out of that. Also, the cost of taking the risk of insuring an unknown population comes out of it. So, only a small percentage actually goes to profits. Nowadays, private insurers manage Medicare and Medicaid, so even if we had gone single payer, the insurance companies would have been involved.

There are non-profit exchange plans, but they really aren't appreciably cheaper than for-profit plans.

Political reality is that having a single payer system where the government took on the total risk of covering the uninsured would have failed just like Hilliarycare did in 1990s. Hopefully, we will get there in the not to distant future.

85. The ACA forced Aetna to cover him.

However, the health industry is still a profit-based system: the ACA is an interim step and does not mandate approval of treatment, so insurers are still able to deny certain services to the insured.

Specifically: my son awoke from a coma and was discharged in less than 24 hours thereafter, because of Aetna's decision to not pay for further treatment.

He was dead less than 2 days after that discharge.

The shame of it is that there will be a lot of parents losing their children in red states that have refused Medicaid expansion.

There's a guy in my home town who had a heart attack several years ago so he had reached his 'lifetime limit' and couldn't get insurance.

I have a lot of right wing friends on Facebook (as does he) and he came right out and said "people complain about Obamacare, but it saved my life."

He had to go into the hospital for about a week and after he got out - he went on vacation to Alaska.

The ACA doesn't solve all problems, but if it's you or your loved one whose life it saves - well, maybe it isn't perfect but in this guy's case it was enough.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

without any details, without any facts at hand are people who are exploiting that child's death to make a dubious and lazily presented set of opinions. It does come off as utterly unconcerned with the actual people involved, who are treated as nothing more than rhetorical fodder. The author presents raw emotion and a terrible story, you say 'Let ME tell YOU about your son's death'. It does not come off well at all. It looks vicious as hell to be honest with you.

It allows poor and otherwise uninsurable people to buy the same crappy insurance that we've had all along. The rant somehow decouples the two.

Simply put, if you are in favor of a health care system that is purely based on greed and profit (as America’s is and has been), then you are in favor of people dying so millionaires can get even richer. And yes, Fuck You for that.

That' what Heritage/Obamacare is. Righteous anger, but misplaced.

P.S. Here’s a big shout-out to the President for still standing by the ACA when so many evil, greedy motherfuckers have been buying congresscritters to try and kill more people with bad insurance. And a big boot up the asses of those bought politicos.

This doesn't fit with the other quoted piece. And, furthermore, the president is one of those "bought politicos".

Godawful story of American "healthcare". My condolences to the probably hundreds of thousands who have suffered similar catastrophes.

Many people suffered and died because of lifetime limits, yearly limits and both of those things are no longer legal under the ACA. Others were unable to get insurance because of pre existing conditions, this is no longer allowed either. It should be single payer, but it is not the same old crappy insurance and your assumption that you know more about the particulars than the family itself is pretty aggressive stuff.
You are being so hyperbolic that it becomes simply incorrect. No more lifetime limits is a huge thing for lots of people with chronic conditions. It's not the same. It is very different.

I said it's good for the poor and uninsurable. It's also very good for the insurance executives, whose job it is to deny care whenever possible in order to maximize profits. My single point in the post which made you apoplectic is that for-profit insurers can, and will, still deny care due to cost considerations. This is not hyperbole. It is a fact. MBAs and their clerks should not be making decisions on what health care should be provided. That should be the sole domain of physicians.

61. That's my only point in this thread, which I will now leave

for-profit companies are required by law to serve their shareholders first. The very idea of for-profit healthcare is a paradox, or oxymoron if you will. Like it or not, the ACA does not help with this.

I should stay out of these threads that contain emotional defenses of the president. What I am seeing is that, as I am sure the insurance companies predicted, the president's defenders are dug in so deeply that they now think Heritage Care is the solution. 20% or more profits are actually being cheered by Dems. As a person whose employer-provided plan just went up by 10% of my annual pay, whose spouse works in healthcare and has to deal with the insurance death panels every day, who has nearly 10 years to go until Medicare, and who remembers how awful this plan sounded when Gingrinch rolled it out 20 years ago, I just can't get on the bandwagon.

You have my deepest sympathies. I cannot imagine the pain of having to bury one of my children. I am glad that the ACA gave you more time with your child. I just wish we could have given more, done something better. As flawed as it is, it still accomplishes good things - it can be improved - and improvement becomes more likely when folks like you are willing to share your stories.

I'm not thrilled with the ACA, but it's better than what many of us had before - and the fact that it gave you more time with your child... that is something is beyond price. We can make it better though. No one should ever have to die because some clerk or insurance company decides not to pay for care.

My daughter's income was a little over $700 and the state of Washington said she was $3 over their allowed limit. She died several months later from a condition that would have allowed her to live if she had medical care. In fact one of the doctor's offices had a debt collector phone my house for payment. You should have heard the silence when I told them she is dead. Everytime I see someone with medical care I resent this nation. She left a fifteen year old daughter who has considered sucicide in her young life. Apparently in this country your life is only worth something if you have money. This happens because individuals only care if it affects them. Christian nation....you gotta be kidding.
This country exposed me to Handford radiation when I was under 5 years of age. Now that I am old, I believe I am next to let die from lack of enough money to please the medical gods. The fourth of July is just a joke to me.

- This, is CAPITALISM. Capitalism cares nothing for sick and dying kids or for anyone for that matter. It is only concerned about MORE. Change it or more will die.

PERIOD.

106. I'm so sorry

I feel your pain. I understand because me and my family went without insurance for more than a decade.

And that changed me FOREVER. I will never, under any circumstances, vote Republican. I feel very strongly about this issue and I don't understand how the anti-Obamacare movement has so much traction - it should be exactly the opposite. Apparently, our problem is that we are sentient and recognize who our oppressor actually is. It disappoints me greatly to see how many people argue and vote against their own interests.

My condolences to you and your family.

this country. Aetna is one of the worse in my opinion - every time I sent in a claim, all I ever got was "we're checking, we're checking, then "here's why we are denying your claim". So, F-bomb away.

Your post points out a very important point. The ACA is saving lives everyday even while it has its faults. Thank you for making this point. The only way to fix problems are one step at a time and the ACA was a very big step. The people arguing with you remind me of the old proverb, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." We can do continue to improve health care in this country. GOTV is the way forward to rid the anti-life right wing from our politics.

Take care of yourself. We need your voice.

117. They killed my 3 1/2 year old son too!

My health insurance company tried twice to cancel our policy since my son was born with Cystic Fibrosis. They felt they had nothing to lose since the law says that a victorious suit would only require them to pay our attorneys fees and the medical bills per the policy.
Part of the problems a person with Cystic Fibrosis has is that the duct from the Pancreas is blocked necessitating taking enzyme pills with meals to pre-digest the food before it enters the intestine. My son for some reason seemed to need much more enzymes than normal to have close to a normal stool. Due to the effects of the disease their lungs are also susceptible to infections so they end up in the hospital a lot. Each time we had to take him in when we had insurance the doctors would always say they would get to the bottom of why he had to take so many enzymes. They would run dozens of expensive tests and a couple of weeks later when he was released they would always say that while they could not figure it out, it didn't hurt to take the extra enzymes and to keep giving them to him. Of course during the times when the insurance company was contesting the policy and we had no coverage, all of the tests, such as Pulmonary Function test which they had previously told us was absolutely necessary, were not done.
One day we could tell he was getting sick and so we drove the 60 miles to the hospital. Before we could get there he started doing very badly, it happened so fast. He lived 21 days in the hospital and died of sepsis caused by the enzymes eating (digesting) his intestine. The doctors were so busy running the same tests each time, already knowing the results to get the insurance money, that they failed to use their brains and check other things. The insurance company had us UN-insured for so long the doctors would do virtually nothing during those times but give him the IV antibiotics to get rid of the infection, nothing else.
It caused us to go through bankruptcy and rely on government aid for his prescriptions. Hillary was scheduled to meet with us during her attempt to reform the health insurance industry, but canceled as her attempt fell apart.
Doctors, remember your oath, not your wallet!

Hang in there Riqster and take things one day at a time! You will heal, but have a nasty scar. The 2 positive things I took from my son's death (it was important to me to find something) was to try to enjoy very minute of every day that I could, instead of so much delayed gratification, waiting to take a trip with the kids until ___. The other thing is that I don't sweat the small stuff. I know that unless I lose another child there is nothing bad that can really happen to me. His death really put things in their proper perspective. When I start to stress or get upset about something I stop and think about how whatever it is that is currently bad is nothing compared to losing my son 21 years ago.

Joshua Lee 7/12/1990 - 12/21/1993. Miss you little Buddy!

I imagine the ACA could have stopped the insurance company from refusing to pay if it had passed earlier.
I believe that now that it is mandated that we use these vultures they have finally stopped doing this because they won.

138. My 26 year old son died in 1999

I am sorry for your loss. I know how you feel.

I am still grieving... When ones has a child die on them the anger never leaves.. My son died from the same kind of brain tumour as Ted Kennedy. He was never ever sick and one day had seizures . 3 days later he was getting brain surgery. that was in April 1998. He got every treatment that could be given, operations, chemos, radiation... very much the same treatment as Ted Kennedy. Glioblastma Multiforme brain tumour kills most who have it in less than 2 years.. But in Canada we have health care for all. My son got whatever needed and was denied no treatment.

I feel for you. I think ACA has helped many. I don't think it is good as what we have up here but it is better than nothing.
My teabagger American relative hates Obama because he is black... this relative works for the MIC..

Here is what my relative wrote recently
I was raised in this country by a Marine and was taught to love my nation and respect the foundations that our country was built upon. I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old that stand during the National Anthem when a Yankee game is on TV. I am doing my best to teach them to honor the country but in light of the current administration, these lessons are becoming increasingly difficult. I have always supported the President of the United States regardless of party line but I expect our Commander in Chief to act in the best interest of each and every citizen. Throughout the past few years, I have moved from questioning President Obama's actions to downright disagreeing with most of those actions.

I hold the Constitution of the United States to the utmost importance and feel it has been neglected in several decisions the President has made. I would actually say with confidence that President Obama has completely and knowingly ignored the Constitution in his methods to push his agenda past (and circumventing) Congress.

Let me first start with the Affordable Health Care Act, which I feel is a monopoly and unconstitutional in itself. How can the Government force an open market to purchase something they do not want to? Further, the entire billion dollar piece of legislation was passed at the convenience of this administration. Once this President bulldozed this bill into action, he decides to delay it at his own discretion. Who is any president to decide which law can or will be implemented and enforced? If the law does not benefit the current administration, Executive Power was erroneously used to delay Obamacare. It seems any legislation can be implemented or ignored on the whim of the presidency.
I know that impeachment is extreme but so are the recent offenses of this administration. People of this country have died and will continue to die unless something changes. While impeachments seems severe, the impeachable offenses seem to be those that I have just described above. Congress issued Articles of Impeachment for acts in three general categories:

•Exceeding the constitutional bounds of the powers of the office.
•Behavior grossly incompatible with the proper function and purpose of the office.
•Employing the power of the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain.

And that 'letter' - wow.

How fucking ironic?

This "marine" was a part of the BIGGEST gov institution, which we are "forced" to pay for in taxes etc so we can kill other people.

But he want to impeach the president for "force an open market to purchase something they do not want to", which ideally if we had single payer would DECREASE costs and help people.

My fucking head hurts....

He died in his sleep of a heart attack and that didn't have to happen. He sought medical care just a few months before he died and they dropped the ball. I intend to write about it one day, but now is not the time. His wife is suing his doctor and a hospital, so I don't want to jeopardize that.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your son. I understand the agony involved.

156. So sorry for your loss.

It is maddening when you consider how many people out there each day profit from this. All the small 401k's, all the investors, all the day traders, all the trust funds out there each getting a little slice of the anguish caused to innocent Americans just trying to not to suffer. Just wanting to remain with their families and friends for a bit longer.
All in the cause of an extra dollar for them to travel to Hawaii or buy a second home or purchase fancy wines.

It disgusts me to no end and it will never end. Unless those who choose to side with the demons and destroyers of this world somehow develop a conscience.

Nothing ends a movement for a change like one filled with people donating to the opposition.
