Has my GM vehicle been recalled? Check the full list here

Since January, General Motors has made 48 recalls covering some 21 million vehicles in North America, an unprecedented wave of safety defect repairs by a major automaker. And although GM has vowed to fix as many vehicles as possible, history shows many will never be properly fixed, and some will likely stay on the road with an open recall for years to come.

To help shovel through the recall blizzard, we've created a table listing every recall GM's announced this year, which we'll update as new recalls come this year. If you see your vehicle on this list, and you haven't received a letter from GM, you should call your nearby GM dealer and verify if your vehicle has any open recalls using its VIN code. Even if there is an open recall, it could be several weeks before a replacement part will be available; the dealer should have instructions on what to do until then, like taking heavy items off your keychain.

And when the repair time comes, don't be afraid to ask for a loaner.

2. I have a 2010 Cobalt.

I called a Chevy dealer about two months ago, or whenever this recall thing hit, and asked about a fix. They put my name on a waiting list and said they would give me a call when the got the parts. Still waiting. In the meantime, about once a week or so I get a notice from GM telling me my car's under recall and that as soon as parts come in I can get it fixed.

I think there is another issue with Cobalts other than the ignition thing, now. But until the dealer gets parts I just have to take my chances, I guess. (But that said, I don't carry my life around on a keychain, like some do, either.)

I don't look to hear from the dealer until much before fall, if then.

3. Cobalts are the ones I keep hearing about. I'd give them another call.

I have a Pontiac, but it's not been on any list - yet. And I did have an ignition issue a couple of years ago, a fuse, if I remember, and that's when I was told to stop carrying all my keys on the same chain, so I have a separate keychain for my car keys.

4. Yeah...I'm probably going to call here again in a few weeks.

This kind of burns -- I think GM should be expediting the manufacture and shipment of these parts, but I really don't sense the urgency. The GM information says I can get a free loaner, so I'm not worried about getting around.

One other thing I DO need to see about here soon is the front passenger side headlight. It's loose.

There are times when I wish I had done a little more homework before getting a new car. But when my old car was in the shop (a 1988 Nova that basically died of old age in 2009, with NO recalls ever), I had a rental Cobalt and I liked it, so when the time came I went with what I knew. So much for brand loyalty.

5. I've been concerned since I also have a GM car.

I also belong to GasBuddy (http://www.gasbuddy.com/), so I've been reading about more and more recalls every day. I do know that you can get a loaner at their expense. Back in April I rented a car and the place was actually crowded with people looking for a loaner because of the recall. I ended up with a 2014 Chevy Cruze which was fine (except for the name, LOL. ), but I've since seen that model on the recall list - think that one's an airbag issue.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, so I'm not too worried. It's the later models that have been on the list. It still runs fine, has been a great car and since they no longer make Pontiacs, I'm in no hurry to replace it. The first car I remember my parents having was a 1956 Pontiac - for years - and they always had Pontiacs, so I thought that was the best car to have. *sigh*

I've read a lot about the Cobalts, to the point that I was surprised to find myself parked next to another one, recently, so I'd check with the dealership. You can get your headlight fixed at the same time...

6. I agree with you about Pontiacs

My parents owned a couple and the last one, a Pontiac 6000, they sold to me when my own car was totaled in an accident. It was the same car I had learned to drive on, lol. By then it had 250,000 kms on it, and it still had not needed any repairs. After I owned it for a few years (And closing in on 300,000 kms), my mechanic neighbor asked me if I was willing to sell it to him. I wasn't really thinking about it, but he wanted to pay more than book value, so I thought, why not? It's getting old...we needed a newer, bigger car (for the kids). After we sold it, the mechanic said that he had been looking for a 6000 because that was the one car him and his coworkers mentioned they hardly ever worked on them. He said the motor is good for at least 700,000 kms. Best motor ever made, he said. I thought he was exaggerating, but my aunt also had a 6000 and hers made it to 800,000 kms with no major issues (she sold it because, like me, she needed something bigger for her kids).

I currently own a Chevy Uplander and I've had nothing but problems. I have 75,000 kms on it (47,000 miles approx.) and I've been spending $2-3,000 a year on repairs. Major repairs. I'm so disgusted with Chevy because of it. I've searched online and nearly everyone has the same issues I do, but no recalls for us because for the most part, it's the small things that keep breaking down. The automatic door doesn't work in the cold, the rear wiper keeps crapping out, the entertainment system and radio speakers have been gone for a long time and we paid extra for it (no point in repairing, can't afford it - bought this 'luxury' when I was with my husband and had money. Now divorced and a single parent, so must decide on the needed repairs) my ABS harnesses need constant replacement, the steering column has been replaced twice, my ball joints keep getting loose, rear suspension needs replacing - again...and on and on. It makes me sad, because other than the constant repairs, it's the perfect vehicle for me and my kids...and they don't make minivans anymore. I guess my next car will be an SUV.

I don't know what brand my next car will be. The Uplander has soured me on Chev. I don't know what I'm going to do.

8. It seems like most every newer model GM car has been recalled at least once recently

These are scary times for choosing a car. The older ones I've known ran forever, too. I just replaced the alternator in my 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, but that's been it *knock on wood* except for brakes and tires. My mother's last car was a 1998 or 1999 Starfire which my brother is still driving. With cars like that, my mother used to get a new car every 10 years. I've read that the average age of cars on the road, these days, is 11.5 years, so I guess I'm in good company.

And that's pretty low mileage to have needed so many repairs. If your model is on the list you should be reimbursed and they will pay for a loaner while your car's in the shop...

I may go with Ford...but they don't have a model that has what I need (I need lower cost, but 7 seats - all 7 seaters at Ford are pricey!)

I've heard good things about Grand Ams over the years. Hope it lasts quite a bit longer for you yet!

My model isn't on any recall lists at all...not recent recalls anyway (I've had one major recall repair in the past though). And my stupid ABS light has been going off again (And when the light goes on, my ABS AND my AWD cuts out). Time for another harness replacement, this'll be the 5th...my mechanic said it's a structural flaw with this model and that he sees it all the time, but GM won't do anything about it.

10. I've also read good things about Fords recently and at least they still make them

They don't make cars like they used to, and they've eliminated so many, like Pontiacs. I thought I was safe getting one, but I do worry since it's a 2001. *sigh*

It seems like there are major defects in many new models, and not only GM. I'm hoping that my Pontiac lasts long enough for the price to go down on Teslas, LOL. I read recently that they're aiming for less expensive ones in four years...

Good luck with your repairs, not the first time I've heard about these kinds of problems. I get a lot of my car news on http://www.gasbuddy.com/. Have been reading more carefully lately, with all the recalls.

7. Will anyone ever buy a GM again?
Sat Jun 28, 2014, 11:42 AM
Jun 2014

I know I won't. I have had 3 great cars. I have had 3 shitty cars. The shitty cars were Ford, Pontiac and Chevy. The good cars were a Honda, a Volvo (101k and going strong) and a new Prius 15k in and no problems.

I am forever done with American cars.

But I'm a light driver and getting to be of an age so that I'm hoping the Cobalt (if it doesn't burst into flames) will take me through to when I have to give up my car when I move into a home.

It's sad and disappointing. As I said upthread, I had a 1988 Chevy Nova that I had until 2009, and I had next to no issues with it. That said, that was back when GM was working with Toyota, so the guts of the car were Toyota while the body was by GM. With responsible and regular maintenance, it ran like a champ until it just got to be too unpredictable because it was just wearing out. Yeah, I felt kind of conspicuous driving that dinosaur around town, but I still sometimes see Novas today, which speaks volumes about how well they were made -- I seriously doubt any car made today would last that long.

I'd like to stay brand loyal, but not if it means taking my life in my hands. What was GM thinking by being so cavalier about all this??? No matter how well they fix this, the PR damage has been done, and may well prove to be fatal. Another damn shame, given all GM has gone through.
