Is anybody else incredibly angry today?

I find myself enraged at the Hobby Lobby SCOTUS decision.

I am visibly shaking as I read and respond to some of the right wing comments on fb threads--particularly ones
put up by progressive organizations. I usually try to avoid engaging these right wing nutjobs, but today,
I am having a very hard time not jumping on the keyboard.

I am dumbfounded, well, not really, at the perpetuation by SCOTUS of the lies regarding some of the contraceptive
methods.

The entire legal challenge against the Obama administration was based on the fundamental lie that certain types of FDA-approved contraception can end a pregnancy. The plaintiffs in this suit took the unscientific stance that pregnancy begins at fertilization and certain types of contraception, like the morning after pill and IUDs, are “abortion-inducing” because they prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. But according to the legal definition of pregnancy, a woman is not actually considered to be pregnant until a fertilized egg is implanted in her uterine lining — so anything that inhibits ovulation, fertilization, or implantation is defined as birth control. And on top of that, there’s evidence that those types of contraception don’t actually prevent implantation in the first place.

The justices who joined the Court’s 5-4 opinion didn’t appear to be concerned about scientific evidence, however. Monday’s decision, written by Justice Samuel Alito, simply allows the business owners to follow their own definition of abortion. “The owners of the businesses have religious objections to abortion, and according to their religious beliefs the four contraceptive methods at issue are abortifacients,” he writes. “If the owners comply with the HHS mandate, they believe they will be facilitating abortions.”

Without challenging the plaintiffs’ definition of what constitutes an abortion or an abortion-inducing drug, the Supreme Court has essentially allowed unscientific beliefs about birth control to carry the weight of the law
.

I am PISSED that some old fart employer wants to tell women which forms of contraception they may use.
What a bunch of patriarchal bullshit! And of course it comes from 5 MEN on the Court.

It is so blatantly discriminatory.

I am SO angry.

Anybody else?

1. I'm right there with you.

So, so discouraged. This morning I thought back to all the progress for women's rights in my lifetime (I'm 66) and now seeing them being torn down one by one is making me physically ill. I've been tied in knots all day.

It's outrageous.

101. That is why Heritage and CATO groomed Alito and Roberts, steal the election

then appoint political operatives to the SC to reverse all progress made, the same progress that has outraged rightwing, immature, childish assholes for decades.

The very idea we would give women rights to their bodies, or rights to minorities, hell, what were we thinking...

I hope you are all very very angry...

I've been getting email after email today asking for $$$ before tonight's deadline and I'm not giving anyone a damned cent. Until some political party shows me they stand for working folks and women all of my cash is going into a "get the hell out of this backwards country" fund.

The politicians are hacks these days. They say what you want them to hear when they want to get elected, and beg for your hard earned cash 24/7/365, then when they get into office, always some BS about how they have to "compromise" with the fascists. Then you look at their donors, and see who is benefiting from these damn compromises.
It's no longer a country of WE THE PEOPLE, it's more like them, the corporations.

59. I will not contribute to PP ever again and here's why:

I contributed (as I normally and often did) last fall. I sent a personal check that has my name and my late husband's name on it. Ever since then, I've received a shitload of solicitations for donations from various organizations, addressed to my husband. There is only ONE entity that this can be traced to: PP! This means they sold my info (or actually my husband's.) I'm angry and upset about this, as I was a faithful, loyal supporter and I believe(d) in their work. Now, I'm not so sure. So NARAL will benefit. http://www.naral.org/

as giving locally means National (corporate) gives them less. 13. YES!

I am also enraged and hope that many other women in this country are too! Women's healthcare shouldn't be separated from HEALTHCARE.

These are FDA-approved contraceptives! None are abortive. The 5 justices don't understand basic science or medicine.

I was really pissed when Alito said that the reason why it's a substantial burden on their expression of religion is that they believe it's morally wrong to kill an embryo and that's what those drugs/iuds do. Guess what, Alito?! At 3 days post fertilization it's not even a blastocyst!! It's 2 weeks away from being anything close to an embryo.

This isn't "religious freedom". Controlling your reproduction is a personal health issue. Giving employers veto power over their employees healthcare is stunning!

35. I just turned 50 . . .

and for the first time in my life I feel truly threatened as an American woman. I know that won't make any sense to some of you, but I didn't become really aware until I hit my thirties. I am furious and sad. If men were the ones having babies none of this would be an issue. I think we all probably know this in our hearts and it hurts.

This is a great article about how this is really about women's sexuality. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jun/30/hobby-lobby-ruling-law-immoral-women-sex

It's the same old bullshit that has been going on for a few thousand years or more.

I mean, really, what business is it of employers which contraceptive methods are
used by their women employees? The sheer audacity of them demanding--expecting--
to control the choices is so f*cking patriarchal.

This is plain and simple discrimination against women. Why are these 5 old men allowed to make decisions about women's health issues? Hobby Lobby's insurance benefits included contraception coverage before Obamacare. This is not about religion. These methods of birth control do not cause abortion. Ask an ob/gyn. I wonder if vasectomies are covered. Viagra?

that we need to get rid of employer based health care insurance and create
a single payer system. But that isn't going to happen overnight or without
major Congressional support.

Perhaps the anger this decision has generated will translate into some serious
voter turnout. I would love to see Republicans rejected all over the country
in such numbers that we would not only keep the WH in 2016, but regain control
of the House while keeping control of the Senate.

Otherwise, they are going to be second-class citizens and employees for the rest of their lives.

68. I expected this decision

So, I'm not surprised. I did read the whole opinion, and it seems that the majority hung it's hat on the exception that was carved out for religious organizations, it just gave a justification for that majority to say, "Well, if we can let the Catholic Church off the hook for paying for contraception by this dual insurance plan, then why can't it be used for the plaintiffs in this case?"

Look, if 100% of contraception and abortion being covered was part of the original ACA, we wouldn't have had the law passed in the first place. President Obama himself signed an executive order saying that abortion coverage would NOT be part of the ACA in order to get enough votes for passage. As time went on, and other exceptions were carved out, it was only a matter of time before the SCOTUS would use particular cases to put their own favorite exceptions in.

If you work for a religious organization, or a closely-held company run by a religious zealot (or family of them) you're going to be furthering their mission, and sometimes that mission might conflict with what you want for yourself.

Had we gone toward a personal healthcare mandate subsidized by taxes, whether single payer or not, we would have avoided this problem, that was foreseeable, as well as many others.

The best way to avoid these problems is to have an health insurance that is centered on YOU and not YOUR JOB.

We would not have to be subjected to this if we were responsible for our insurance.

I am so grateful I am not a young woman today in this country. We fought so hard to gain these rights. I am so sorry. We need (1) term limits on the Supreme Court; (2) a progressive liberal clean sweep of both houses to be able to impeach / get rid of Scalia, Alito, Thomas (whom I particularly loathe) and Roberts. WTF is up with Kennedy?

The only positive side of this - I hope - is that it will mobilize women, progressives, liberals.

102. Anger as motivation, is an engine running with the pedal to the floor......

...but not going anywhere.

• Angry people aren't optimistic at all. They wouldn't be angry if they were thinking positively (optimistically).

• Anger destroys relationships because it is all power with no controls. No focus. It's like a volcano that may help the earth relieve internal pressures, but it destroys everything in its path while doing so.

• Anger is the opposite of self-insight. Anger focuses its energy outwardly toward the world and toward others as the ''cause'' of their problems. Rather than toward the self where all answers truly lie.

• Anger causes violence. Anger is the point you reach when words can go no further. Anger is the reaction to other's violence. Whether it is verbal violence or of or physical variety. Anger is a response, not an act of volition.

• Anger is not a negotiation strategy because you can't control it. Your anger depends upon others making you so, so then how can you negotiate with something you have no control over?

- People just need to calm down and stop letting the world control your emotions.

That appeared to be the crux of it, from what I've read. Isn't the First Amendment enough?

Second, this would not be an issue if our health care wasn't tied to our jobs (for the most part).

Time for single-payer now. Canadian-style, where the government pays the bills. You know, like Medicare, something we already have.

125. Not angry

Hard to be angry at something you saw coming a mile away, did anyone here really think it wouldn't be at least this bad?

126. Here's something we can do that I found in my in-box this morning.

Two right-wingers are slowly making their way through the judicial nomination and confirmation process even though Democrats control both the White House and the Senate.

Sign and send the petition to your Democratic senator(s): Do not vote to confirm Michael Boggs. (for people with one or more Democratic senator) http://campaigns.dailykos.com/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=902

Sign and send the petition to President Obama: Do not nominate Ward Armstrong. (for everyone)
http://campaigns.dailykos.com/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=967

The first person we have to stop is Michael Boggs. President Obama cut a deal with Georgia's two Republican senators to nominate Boggs—a right-wing activist judge who is anti-choice, anti-civil rights and anti-marriage equality—in exchange for those two senators dropping their opposition to other nominees.

This is unacceptable. Not only should a Democratic president never, ever be nominating someone like Boggs to serve on the federal bench, but after we won filibuster reform last November Democrats no longer have to make these kinds of deals in order to get anyone confirmed.

Sign and send the petition: Do not vote to confirm Michael Boggs.

The second person we have to stop is Ward Armstrong, who voted to end the Affordable Care Act, supported allowing handguns in bars, voted to close Virginia’s abortion clinics and supported a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Virginia's two Democratic U.S. senators have recommended that President Obama nominate Armstrong for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. No, no, no, no, no:

Sign and send the petition: Do not nominate Ward Armstrong.

We can't reverse these bad decisions overnight, but we can stand up today and tell the Democratic Party not to make things even worse. Today we say NO MORE.

Sign and send: Do not vote to confirm Michael Boggs.
http://campaigns.dailykos.com/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=902

Sign and send: Do not nominate Ward Armstrong.
http://campaigns.dailykos.com/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=967

Keep fighting,
Chris Bowers, Daily Kos

127. I'm pissed because the ruling is such indefensible bullshit.

and I don't even have ovaries!

These "justices" are creating laws from the bench based upon their opinions, beliefs and ideology.
Their attempts to justify their decisions are ridiculous, and they don't even give a shit.

Unchecked power is dangerous.

132. Me too

This is one of the worst courts ever with the exception of the Dem appointees. The pukes on the court wouldn't know how to make a correct legal, moral, or constitutional decision if it came up to them and bit them in the ass.

That's why getting out the vote for Democrats in every election to come is key. It is more important than ever to make sure we strengthen our hold on the Senate and keep the Presidency so we make sure the PUKES aren't allowed to appoint any more ignorant racist, sexist, corporate ass kissers to the SCOTUS.

135. angry, enraged, outraged, and horrified do not begin to cover it. while the decision

is not surprising, given the court's ideological bent, it is sickening that they are not even bothering to try to pretend anymore.

when I think about how hard we have fought to gain even the most minimal and basic autonomy in this patriarchal world, and how rapidly those small gains are being removed, I am sickened.

what is it going to take for the women of this country to RISE UP?

139. So based on specific religious belief they exclude birth control yet allow blood transfusions.

So the religious beliefs of Catholics and Fundamentalist Bible thumpers outweigh Jehovah Witness. Having such beliefs for yourself is fine now the door is open to allow them to creep into everyone's lives. Never in American history has there been a worse Supreme Court.

144. It is Only a Matter of Time…

before one of the "fetus personhood" laws makes its way to the Supreme Court. When that happens, they will issue a ruling that sets us back 100 years. They will issue a ruling that not only overturns Roe v. Wade, but goes beyond that to ban abortion entirely. Now we know they will ban birth control as well.

The Supreme Court has been taken over by Opus Dei, and they are beginning to substitute their religious doctrine for scientific fact and the Constitution.

And we can't do a damn thing about it.

165. Yes. I'm also angry about this SCUMBAG Kimberly Yee

http://www.democraticunderground.com/11702310

Who not only has tried to force women to carry stillborn babies to term because she's a religious ASSHOLE, she has also blocked research into mmj for veterans with PTSD.

And she got the scientist doing research into this project - that has had to deal with obstruction from the federal govt. for decades, anyway, when a scientist FINALLY got approval, Yee, the SCUMBAG, got the woman scientist fired.

So, yeah, two days, one after the other, with this kind of news from RELIGIOUS FASCIST FUCKERS.

Kimberly Yee, scumbag.
