PSA: Check your air conditioners.

If you live in an older building, you may have an older system that has a drip pan. Make sure it isn't clogged, or water will overflow all over the floor. Mine just did that, because I didn't know about it and couldn't figure out why the carpet in my bedroom was wet. I was afraid my cats were forgetting their litterbox manners. Water was causing staining on the ceiling of the apartment below mine, and the guy called the maintenance guy. An easy but important fix.

usually just with a water hose from one end or the other. Most times, the problem was caused by insects, such as mud-dauber wasps, using it for their purposes

If you are able, I'd also recommend collecting that water to use on your plants

I got some absorbent pads that seem to be working better than the old towels I was using. Once I get it dry, I should be better able to assess any damage. I hope I don't have to replace the carpet.

They do their dripping outside.

Sometimes the dog hears the dripping and thinks there's a critter in the yard under the back end of the air conditioner. Somehow he misses the damn critter that's in the house though.
