Is he "persona non gratis" on D.U. - yes, no, maybe and why? I'm series.

No one has noticed that all of his material is the same racist shit you'd hear on Stormfront or Freep, just acted out using puppets.

(20,453 posts)... Ahhh... the days when you could just make fun of your grandmother... Then, you had to grow up and have a personality and a career.
Actually, it was a natural transition.
...for posting this Downthread I make note of the Larry - David exchange.

(5,019 posts)Youtube helpfully suggested it when I looked up the first video. I'm now about half an hour into a David Cross binge.

(7,776 posts)I find it irritating, but at times, entertaining.
The most favorite example of mine is Chumley from "Pawn Stars".
It's not that he's stupid... it's just bad acting stupid.
unionworks
(3,574 posts)...I don't think Chumlee is nearly as dumb as he acts. He impresses me of more of a serious badass biker type.
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)Chum seems to be particularly expert about pinball machines, and they are a complex and esoteric topic.
Drove by the Gold and Silver when I was in Vegas for CES in January but there was a huge line of people waiting to get in so we didn't stop. A colleague of mine sold a whole bunch of games and toys to Johnny at the Toy Shack a few blocks away. Johnny's a nice fellow.
Canuckistanian
(42,290 posts)And I don't begrudge him for it.
He's not actually offensive, from what I've heard of him.
Incitatus
(5,317 posts)He created a character that appeals to a large audience and makes damn good money doing it. I bet years ago he would have never imagined acting the way he is now. Maybe his politics is even part of the act. Idk I'm not really a fan I prefer Carlin, Kat Williams, Chistopher Titus, and Robin Williams to name a few.
JonLP24
(29,929 posts)had some offensive stuff. "Are you a turd(Kurd) or a shit(Shiite)?" Gay panic stuff, on top of that, it was very unfunny.

(96 posts)(Gomer's cousin) According to Wikipedia, Goober's most recent 'star' appearance was on Larry the Cable Guy's Hula Palooza Christmas Luau in 2009. If you failed to TiVo that classique so you and your family could 'enjoy' it for eternity, eat your heart out, or whatever.

(3,574 posts)...is a leftist comedian that I love. He and Larry exchanged broadsides, but Cross also said if he and Larry got together they would probably crack each other up. I have to stand by my guns here, Larry seems to be a genuinely funny guy who actually. Loves people.

(5,549 posts)...next up, after the commercial break, Larry works more "poop jokes" into the show, and whacks a fish-hooked garfish on the head with a hammer.
That's what I call ENTERTAINMENT - as we work our way, as a society, to a real life version of the movie "Idiocracy."

(7,099 posts)He'd lose that high-pitch twang when he got frustrated or was laboring with something. That was kinda funny, the only part that was though.

badtoworse
(5,957 posts)I have found over the years though that most women think the Stooges were stupid and most men think they were hilarious. Makes no sense to me, but that's been my experience.
unionworks
(3,574 posts)...has been the same. However, interviews I've heard of women who were actually in the Stooges skits said they were even funnier in real life than on film... I can only imagine. The 30's were a lot less uptight....
hifiguy
(33,688 posts)Their short subjects were regular fare on the local kiddie shows when I was little and I loved them to death. Still do, for that matter. They will always be funny, just like the Marx Brothers, though for different reasons. "The cheese, Moe, get the cheese!!"
I've only met one woman who truly liked the Stooges, and she grew up with six brothers.

unionworks
(3,574 posts)...from what I've read actually had some of the most beautiful actresses of their time in their skits. When you see a beautiful woman catching a bisquit in her mouth, it was for real, not trick photography or special effects.

(7,776 posts)Just about anything with Curley is a classic...
Shemp... depends.
Anything afterwards is an abomination... kind'a like Guns 'N' Roses touring without Axel and/or Slash.

I feel sorry for liberals out there.

(7,776 posts)Shankapotomus
(4,840 posts)i guess my beef isn't specifically with ventriloquism than a sort of fixation on rated-G, family entertainment. there are always exceptions, of course.
still there seems to be a difference between entertainment in red states (or maybe it's rural areas) and entertainment in and around large urban metropolises. maybe it's a local thing? but i don't doubt conservative christian values have some play in it.

(33,688 posts)Curly was one of the funniest people who has ever lived. The Shemp episodes are variable. and everything after Shemp is dreck, especially the ones with Joe Besser, who sucked donkey dick. He had a clause in his contract that Moe couldn't "hit" him. What the hell good is a Stooge that can't be smacked around by Moe?

According to a CMT bio, Whitney grew up on a pig farm in Pawnee City, Nebraska. He went to college at the now defunct Baptist University of America. He credits his roommates from Texas and Georgia for inspiring his imitation Southern accent. He dropped out after his junior year after trying his hand at comedy.

(39,451 posts)Kinda off topic - but not completely
Jeff Foxworthy was being interviewed by some beautiful young woman on CMT televison.
(My daughter watches this stuff)
Anyway they were talking about his phrase "Git er Done" and Foxworthy was talking about how people always say that to him.
Then he said one time Pres Bush saw him and said that to him.
This beautiful young woman replied - oh - what a surprise. Some redneck from Texas saying Git er done.
I busted out laughing. Could not believe my ears that happened on CMT.

(488 posts)sure, in many stereotypes, there is a grain of truth, but more importantly there are countless individuals who dont fit them AT ALL
after putting forth decades of these stereotypes, and making people unsympathetic towrd them, working people got a baseball bat starting in the early 1990s with NAFTA
in the 1980s, the image of tech consultants was the 'grey or blue suited IBM mold'
but then came the media stereotype of 'nerd' 'geek' or Americans who did study math and science, and the 'fat and 'lazy' of those who didnt
the baseball bat was not far behind
those you wish to destroy, you first belittle
