(5,937 posts)There is a lot wrong with the ruling and a lot wrong with peoples understanding of it. I know a little about it. I know a lot about the Affordable Care Act. Prior to the ACA companies could almost pick whatever they wanted to be included in the health plans they offered their employees. The SCOTUS ruling really didn't change anything, if there was no ACA there wouldn't have even been a case. It also further illustrates what a POS the ACA truly is. Again, I know a lot about this, I help people get real healthcare everyday.

(1 post)So why do you think it is okay for an employer to "choose what kind of healthcare you receive" rather than setting minimum standards for what all people who are insured should receive? I ask this because you call the ACA a POS and state that prior to the ACA the Hobby Lobby case wouldn't have even been a consideration. (Which of course, it wouldn't have been because their insurance provided exactly what they objected to in the SCOTUS case.)

(19,926 posts)Who hates babies???
By your reasoning we should hear two sides of every argument and just ignore that one of them is true and the other is false.
Climate deniers, hey, they have a point, we just need to understand them.
No. Some people are just wrong. And the evangelicals in this country who are the loudest are just wrong. They are not practicing what Jesus preached at all. And if you're just trying to push an anti-abortion agenda, well that's wrong too.
ZombieHorde
(29,047 posts)interpreting the word of God is based off personal feelings. Neither the left nor the right practice what Jesus taught, in my opinion, but I'm just as right/wrong as you and evangelical right.
Their argument against abortion is not based on hating women, just as our argument for abortion is not based on hating babies.
We cannot know if the other side is false if we don't know what they are saying. In my opinion, we should know what we are rejecting. I believe making a decision after hearing various arguments, and seeing if any side has any evidence, is beneficial.
JustAnotherGen
(31,869 posts)Is back alley abortions. That is all I need. My reasons have nothing to do with God or religion. They have to do with freedom to manage/control my fertility. It is selfish, self absorbed and self centered. If I'm not for me - then who will be?
Their God? According to them - no he is not. Yet I see nothing in the King James Bible, RC Bible, or "The Book" where JC spoke to abortion.
So I reject that as a reference.
cui bono
(19,926 posts)But it isn't.
Also, they can be proven wrong by their very own bible. Just read the teachings of Jesus and see how they live. They aren't living as Jesus would have wanted them too and it can be proven.
ZombieHorde
(29,047 posts)before you can determine if they're correct or not. Right? If we understand their position, then we can argue against the position. If their position is wrong, then what need do we have to misrepresent it, other than propaganda, which does have its benefits, I guess.
I have, and I haven't seen anyone on the left or the right following the teachings of Jesus, or even advocate for anyone to do those things.
The teachings of Jesus cannot even be agreed upon. What does love your enemy mean? What does sell everything you own and give the money to the poor mean? What does "do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two " mean? Etc., etc. These things are up to interpretation.
These things are NOT up for interpretation. I dunno what religiousity that you are grabbing that from, but it's CLEAR, not interpretation.
ZombieHorde
(29,047 posts)and people don't seem to agree with each other when it comes to Biblical Interpretation. Science doesn't help us interpret the word of God. The authors are dead. What objective standard do we use? How do we test our interpretation?

China has "eased" the one child policy:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-25533339
The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a resolution allowing couples to have two children if either parent is an only child.
A proposal to abolish re-education through labour camps was also approved.
The changes in policy were announced following a meeting of top Communist Party officials in November.
The reforms, which came at the end of a six-day meeting of the congress, have already been tested in parts of the country.

Frankly, I don't see more than a tiny minority of shoppers either boycotting or shopping extra to make up for the boycotters, most businesses simply deal with people who want their goods at the prices offered, and don't think about the politics of it one way or the other.

(18,998 posts)And keeps us focused on things that don't really do anything to change the system...which I suspect is the goal.
Just look what this is about...what an insurance company can pay for or not...not like the right defines it, as making religion pay for abortions...or as the left defines it as and attack on women...but about insurance coverage.
But they have parlayed it into an outrage for both sides, that will occupy both sides for months...and widen the gap between us, making us hate them more and them hate us more.
Classic divide and conquer.
theHandpuppet
(19,964 posts)The only "dividing and conquering" I see being done around here are by those who just dropped by to say that the efforts of those who are protesting don't mean crap, that what and why they're protesting doesn't mean crap, that those protesting are politically naïve and aren't working for political change on many fronts, et al. Have I missed anything?
I'll tell you what I saw at a local protest. I saw passersby energized enough to park their cars and join in the protest. I saw people signing up with WORD (Women Organized to Resist and Defend) to stay informed on political action. I saw women and men making contacts and sharing their ideas and goals. I witnessed people who stopped solely to ask questions about the SC decision and what it means.
Motivation? Ask DUer Davsand, his 17 year old daughter and five of her young friends who took to the streets on July 4th to show people what freedom of speech and standing up for your rights is all about.
I think it's a sad day for DU when people here took to the streets and took a stand for their rights only to be trashed by others on a supposedly "progressive forum".
zeemike
(18,998 posts)But will not stop a damn thing...we had massive protest against the war in Iraq and what came of that?
Did you ever ask why?
Well the answer is because they can and do ignore it, and in fact use it to fire up the conservatives to be for what we are against, and against what we are for...and we wind up with division not consensus.
But don't let me bring you down...keep doing what you do but don't expect different results because the days when protests made a difference are over...in those days the media was your friend, and that is not the case now.
IMO the only way forward is to change the system, and protests have not nor will they do it.
theHandpuppet

One even started patronizing Darden Group restaurants ( Olive Garden, Red Lobster ) due to the ACA hoo-hah surrounding it. No, they switched to shitty food as a show of solidarity to conservative causes.

(322 posts)is how we vote with our dollars. 45 cents out of every dollar spent locally stays in the community, while only 15 cents out of each dollar spent with a national chain/product stays home. But the only effective way to really stop all this nonsense is to pull the plug on your cable TV and spend those dollars locally. That's a double whammy of not giving your lives and government over to a handful of extremely wealthy cocksuckers, and creating more jobs locally with companies who haven't been given huge tax breaks by municipalities trying to attract large corporations who externalize their negative impact, thus increasing the tax base exponentially. So instead of boycotting, we need to "buycott."
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Seriously, I have a "buycott" app on my phone that helps me not choose Koch products or choose products without GMO, etc.
It's simply called "Buycott."
...and they have a campaign to boycott all products and services from corporations who refuse to cover contraception. Just joined that campaign.
americannightmare
(322 posts)to those folks who go to the trouble of putting these types of campaigns together (though I don't own a Smartphone or anything that would involve apps, a bit of a luddite here), it's about more than "buycotting" the Kochs. It's about taking down the people who control the media, and thereby our government. Not to mention other corporations who are off-shoring for both tax avoidance and human and natural resource exploitation. Our tax dollars not only paid for the incubation of what became the internet and personal computers as we know them (http://www.internetsociety.org/internet/what-internet/history-internet/brief-history-internet-related-networks); but now our tax dollars pay for a hopelessly bloated defense budget which is utilized primarily as a resource defense apparatus, defending resources that at the least should be shared by all mankind as opposed to controlled by one or two countries, the best example being rare earth minerals contained mostly in China but controlled as much by the U.S.'s ability to project military power over China (at least for now) than by China. Apple demands that the U.S. use its military power if necessary to keep the rare earth mineral supply chain open. That's the long way around to saying that as long as Apple insists on off-shoring jobs to China to manufacture their products, and my tax dollars are paying for them to continue to do that, I will boycott them and never buy another "new" computer or phone. If that means that eventually I won't be able to use the internet at home, so be it. We all have to take a stand against corporations or continue to be dominated by them and their unsustainable and pernicious practices. My apologies for the lengthy rant.

It does no good to tell these twits David Green didn't have any religious objections over the last 20 years to buying his full time employees health insurance that covered birth control. Or that he doesn't have any religious objections to supporting forced abortions for the workers in China who actually make 90% of the crap they sell.
David Green doesn't give the tiniest shit if his workers have abortions. David Green is grabbing this opportunity to shift more of the medical care costs to his workers and more of the wealth to himself.

And, I agree with you. I can't stand Hobby Lobby; but I couldn't stand them before this decision. The people (mostly women) that shop there will continue to shop there because they don't give a shit about anything except that HL is a religious corporation.
Joining the boycott is very easy for us here at DU. But, again. The people that shop there do not care and will continue to shop there.
Here's a question I have, and granted; I haven't dug into it since the decision. What are the employees of HL doing? Are they protesting? Are they writing letters and petitions to HL? They damn sure need to be.

(540 posts)Lobby's website that currently is holding items out of their sell-able inventory. This is my protest. It is quiet, but it is disruptive. Hobby Lobby's website lets you select items to put in an electronic shopping cart to later be checked out. They do not ask for any personally-identifying information like name, address, phone, email, or credit card information before you "check out". They place a cookie on your computer, nothing more. When you load the shopping cart, it stays loaded for some time, and the items you select are removed from their electronic inventory to not be sold to other shoppers. To keep that shopping cart tied up, I will stop by daily and toss a new item in or remove an item. Also, I have loaded different promo codes. These actions show recent activity to the electronic sales and inventory systems. Maybe they'll catch on over a time when their buyers have to order new materials to replenish inventory to cover the items in my cart. Several of my friends are doing the same thing. Not major purchases, mind you, just a few hundred dollars worth of merchandise on electronic hold. Maybe you can join me. I recommend going out to get a promo code from a promo code website or going to their mainpage to snip up their limited time promo codes. This makes your entire shopping cart look legit.
