Norfolk, NE - It's a controversial parade float that passed hundreds of people in Norfolk on the fourth of July, including children.
A pickup with a flatbed attached, carried an outhouse with a dummy. On the side of the float, writing that said "Obama's presidential library."
Glory Kathurima said she instantly knew what that meant. Her tone of happiness quickly changed to disgust and fear for her nine year old daughter. Many are calling it racist, including Kathurima, "I'm ashamed, I'm appalled."
The Norfolk mother is outraged, she calls the image, cruel, disrespectful and uncalled for. "You see people laughing, pointing at it, smiling, looking positive about it. I immediately felt sick to my stomach," said Kathurima who is from Kenya. "I knew what that meant and I knew there was no sort of political statement being made by an image like that."

(1,644 posts)Either way, it is protected by the First Amendment, regardless of how we feel about it. I sort of wonder how many of us here on DU (including myself) would react the same way if this float had appeared ten years ago, with a GWB effigy instead of Obama? Even idiots have constitutional rights. (A fact which has no doubt protected me on more than one occasion).

I once heard Senator Russ Feingold stop a man from talking at a political forum (a town meeting, I guess) for talking down President Bush. He said something along the lines of "you do not disrespect the office of the presidant"... good enough for Russ, good enough for me.

(34,661 posts)few years back, the locals passed an ordnance blocking the Border Patrol from raiding local manufacturing and meat plants. Hispanics are treated like shit in this town, but hey,we need them to kill our pigs and cows so the Chinese owned Packing plant makes money. And there will be no Unions in our town we were told by the Mayor last summer. You want a city that's totally backassward, this is one of them. Confederate flags on ton of cars and trucks. Got to remember, close to South Dakota border and a TeaBilly area. This is one of the Reddest parts of the midwest. Talk about hostile.
