General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'll say it: It's moments like this I'm glad Obama is our president.
He's level-headed, calm and is not about to overreact on something that could ultimately lead to World War III. I see McCain and the right frothing at the mouth and it reminds me of what it could be like in some alternate reality - the war crazed fanning these flames in hopes of advancing Cold War II - but this time making it HOT.
I trust Obama will handle this crisis like he's handed much of the international conflict that has dominated his presidency - and I'm sure he'll be called weak, leading from behind, not a leader ... all because he won't commit American men and women to the battle field.
Scary stuff all around.

(51,267 posts)I think Democrats have learned their lesson after Vietnam. Since then there has been less war under Dem presidencies.

(14,031 posts)How people can still be blood-thirsty for war is beyond me, but the Republicans certainly are. We are very fortunate indeed.

(1,965 posts)War fills the coffers of their real constituents. Rand, Halliburton, Locked Martin, etc.
This is why I would like to see the draft reinstated with NO, ZERO exceptions. If there was a chance one of their kids would be cannon fodder, they might not be so eager to start wars.

(15,626 posts)They would call him the worst president ever if he avoids another costly stupid war.
They would call him the worst president ever if he takes us to war and anything goes wrong.
They would call him the worst president ever and disastrously incompetent if he did everything exactly as GW Bush did.

One might think a former prisoner of war would not be so eager to create a situation where other men and women might have to endure POW status like he did, but the exact opposite is true for McCain.

(100,133 posts)I look at him and wonder if he's got the beginnings of dementia, because that anger is so out of control in public.
Cheney's a different sort: he's just a cold-blooded psychopath with a lust for power and destruction beyond belief. It seems his many heart troubles could have affected his brain in some fashion, but in his case the cold-bloodedness has become clearer.

(28,262 posts)Cold-blooded, soulless piece of shit that he is. I keep thinking I should go get a piece of wood and cut it to a point, so when he dies I'll have a ready-made stake to drive into his grave to make sure he doesn't come back to life.

First off the idea that a plane being shot down in Russia is any threat to the US, or world peace, is just fearmongering.

I feel all I can do to stay sane is to focus on the good that will inevitably come out of this, even if overshadowed by the bad.

(16,511 posts)Compounding the scariness, the previous administration trashed our national reputation and put our reliability as a responsible ally into question. Dealing with present realities would be daunting enough without having to first re-establish trust that was unnecessarily broken. Damned right I'm glad for level-headedness; likewise, I think, for the rest of the world.

(1,182 posts)how Elizabeth Warren would handle today's global idiocy. I think I know how Hillary would (slightly more chicken-hawkish?) Foreign Policy is supposedly her weakness. But then so was Obama's, right?
I watched Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC today, like the broken record she is, going to John McCain as if he would have something other to say than everything bad in the world is a result of "Obama's feckless foreign policy."
I was done with McCain as a serious player when Keith Olbermann called him out on the campaign trail for saying "I know how to get Bin Laden".
It's baffling why the old geezer keeps getting on TV. He must be really taking it rectally for the military-industrial-media complex.

If it turns out that the plane was shot down by pro-Russian separatists, should we bomb Russia?
Maybe Obama should throw a dart at a map and bomb whatever country it hits, just to shut McCain the fuck up.
