The law, which took effect last October, is based on the disputed argument that a babys nerves are developed enough to feel pain at the 20 week stage.
In a letter urging Governor Jan Brewer to veto the bill which which bans abortions after 20 weeks Danielle Deaver,34, of Grand Island, described the pain of waiting to give birth to a baby she knew would die.
While we waited, we tried to pray, but we didnt know what to pray for. So we spent our days and nights telling our daughter how much we loved her, how sorry we were, and how we wished we could do something different.
There are no words for how awful the 10 days were from the moment my water broke to the day my daughter died. There are no words for the heart break that cut deeper every time she moved inside of me for those 10 days, she wrote.

In her case, Danielle Deaver insisted, "We didn't want an abortion."
She said her doctors consulted attorneys about exceptions in the law because of the risk of infection that might destroy her chances of ever getting pregnant again.
"What we wanted," she said, "was our labor induced so that I would go into labor and give birth to her and the outcome of her life would not have been different."
"My health was at risk, as well," she added. "We decided going forward it (premature labor) would be inevitable and we wanted nature to take its course. We were told we couldn't do that."

(4,325 posts)what they have to do with their own bodies? I'm so sick of hearing and reading about this. Men aren't told they can't have vasectomies; or that they can't use condoms; or that they can't use Cialis and Viagra. Or they can't have surgeory if they have prostate cancer because the treatment kill the sperms which will make them unable to produce children. Why are we being treated like this?

(27,275 posts)healthcare best left to doctors and patients, and politicians need to stay out of that equation. there are no republicon politicians proposing laws to limit men's access to healthcare.

(116,020 posts)Men CAN go get a vasectomy without having to get lectured to about killing unborn sperms. There is a difference and I am sure you know that.

(116,020 posts)Men have to get a prescription for a medicine.
Women are unable to get reproductive health care.
A more accurate valid comparison would be that women have to get a Rx for Oral contraceptives, men need an Rx for viagra.
Health care should be between your doctor and you, not between politicians and you. You seem to miss that point.

(14,177 posts)they will call it a slight risk. I would hope at some point a doctor will do what is best for his/her patient and challenge the law.

(16,875 posts)But what about the other "they"? The ones who are clueless that this is the sort of thing that's going on in their own states? My state (Georgia) just passed this same bill. I guess most people just won't care until someone they know personally suffers because of this law. (and in GA, one state rep. argued that he had seen countless pigs and cows born dead and it was sad but it was just life)

(198 posts)Title states story is from Nebraska, but story refers to Governor Jan Brewer?
Jan Brewer = Governor of Arizona.
Dave Heineman = Governor of Nebraska
Misprint, or is rest of story...not as factual?

(2,381 posts)The article mentioned they are fighting against that law, perhaps it meant to say they are also fighting against similar laws, and perhaps (again) Arizona is considering just such a similar law.
Just a conjecture, but it would clear up the confusion. Of course, if the article was written just a little clearly there would be no confusion in the first place.

(8,994 posts)There can't possibly be any credible study that says fetuses don't feel pain at 20 weeks. That's just stupid, that's just bad idiotic science.
However it was even stupider to force any woman to go through this shit, only to see the baby die.
Way to go, GOP, for practicing medicine without a license!
