2 U.S. Marshals and an Officer Are Shot in Greenwich Village

A New York City police detective and two federal marshals were shot on Monday in Greenwich Village when they went to arrest a man accused of molesting a child in California, the authorities said.

The suspect, whom the authorities identified as Charles Mozdir, was shot and killed in a gun battle that erupted in the tight confines of a smoke shop located in the popular Manhattan neighborhood.

Police Commissioner William J. Bratton, speaking at news conference on Monday evening, said that the detective was seriously wounded and could have been killed, had it not been for his bulletproof vest.

Holding the vest up to the cameras, Mr. Bratton pointed to a spot that covered the detective’s right chest and said that the round lodged there could have been fatal.

Another shot, however, struck the detective in the stomach, just below the vest. He was being treated at Bellevue Hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Because a wanted criminal resisting a lawful arrest order following due process of law is just like armed resistance against a tyrannical government. Just like the Branch Davidians were just like the Minutemen at Lexington and Concord.
