Steve Wynn, of Macao, Communist China is seeking a casino license in Everett against Mohegan Sun in Revere.
I represent the unionized workforce at the racetrack in Revere that will get the casino. Both cities have approved separate proposals, and a commission will decide the winner in September.
I have posted a 2012 video of Steve Wynn wading into national politics. We don't need his contaminated politics in
Massachusetts and you know once he gets his foot in the door and starts pouring in money, things could change in our dark blue state.
Wynn in 2012
If you can help us DU this poll in favor of my unionized workforce in my hometown of Revere and send Steve Wynn a message that we don't want him in Massachusetts, I will be grateful.

(8,652 posts)Steve Wynn says he can't do business with Obama because he's a Socialist. Instead, he feels comfortable dealing with Communists in China.
How's that for political chutzpah?

(11,175 posts)Presumably, the commission's duty is to consider all applicants fairly, and select the one that presents the best proposal, taking into account location, financing, local effects, and a host of other factors.
Your argument is that one of those other factors should be an applicant's political views. That's where I disagree.
Consider, hypothetically, if South Carolina passes a similar casino law and also has Wynn competing against another applicant. The commission established by the State of South Carolina announces that it's awarding the license to Wynn because he's politically conservative and has denounced Obama, and that he should therefore get the license instead of some liberal. What would be the reaction on DU? Calls for lawsuits, impeachment, mass protests, whatever -- and rightly so. Using a licensing proceeding of this sort to reward political supporters and/or punish enemies would be grossly improper.
If it would be improper in a red state, it would be improper in a blue state.
I haven't voted in the poll. I have no information about the comparative merits of the Revere and Everett applications. My belief, though, is that the decision should be made on the basis of those merits, not out of vengeance toward people who exercise their right to disagree with us.

(8,652 posts)First of all, my post was not for the Commission, but for DUers, and anyone can have an opinion on the casino location for any reason they want.
But if you insist on more information, try this Boston Globe Story on for size
Link to corruption in Wynn proposal. Land deal connected to convicted felons. Back dated contracts.

(11,175 posts)Yes, "anyone can have an opinion on the casino location for any reason they want." For example, if someone wanted to urge that Wynn be denied the license because he's Jewish and the Jews own everything already, that hateful and irresponsible view would be protected by the First Amendment.
Urging that Wynn be denied the license because we don't like his politics isn't anti-Semitism but it's also irresponsible.
(Just to be fair, I'm sure Wynn has some racist supporters who back his bid because they don't want the Native Americans to get the license in preference to a white-controlled company.)
Anyone can also have an opinion about opinions about the casino location, and I was stating my opinion on that subject.
Your link is apparently an attempt to impute bad conduct to Wynn. I agree with the general proposition that prior conduct should be a factor. Companies with bad records concerning labor (NLRB violations), environment (EPA violations), or securities (SEC violations) should be disfavored on that ground. The particular article you linked did not, on my quick read, show any misconduct by Wynn, just that the people who sold him the land and retained some kind of interest in it were bad actors who were engaged in lying to the commission.
Maybe if I delved into the whole thing in great detail I'd agree with you that it shows Wynn to be a bad apple. Otherwise, though, I don't think that the commission should hold it against Wynn that he bought the land from unsavory characters. "Person X is linked to Malefactor Y" is classic McCarthyism if the nature of "linked" doesn't show any wrongdoing by X.

(8,652 posts)specifically forbids any convicted felon from profiting from the awarding of a casino license in any way.
Wynn is paying these people $100,000 a month just to hold the land.
There are many other issues.
I am sure Mohegan Sun and it's landlord Suffolk Downs racetrack will be awarded the license on Sept. 12. This poll is just for fun. In reality, polls show that Mass. voters prefer Mohegan over Wynn 3 to 1.
Suffolk Downs, the landlord that has provided good jobs at good wages for a unionized workforce, is owned by Richard Fields, who is also Jewish and a great employer. Richard has contributed to New York Democrats, like Hillary Clinton.
He is so close to Bill Clinton, that he had him over when Bill spoke at Harvard a few years ago.
Wynn calls Obama a Socialist, yet deals with Communists in China. Outside of Las Vegas, he has been thrown out of every state he has tried to build a casino, (or pulled out before he was humiliated). These states include New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

(8,652 posts)Thank you, my DU friends, and keep up the good work. Those raw numbers are Mohegan in Revere 1,230: Wynn in Everett 889 and neither is 160
I really appreciate your loyalty.
