Rumours began circulating about the captured soldier this morning, and at around lunchtime the Israeli military spokesman announced that they feared a soldier had indeed been taken.
The Israeli defence forces have named the captured soldier as Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, 23, from Kfar Saba.
Channel 4 News understands that the soldier is from a family of British Jewish immigrants. It is also understand that he is a cousin either second or third of Israeli's defence minister, Moshe Ya'alon.
THE IDF spokesman said that around 9.30am Israeli soldiers came under fire in an area around the border of the southern Gaza Strip and "there's a fear" that during the incident a soldier "has been kidnapped by the terrorists".
The spokesman added that the family of the soldier had been informed. The military said the situation is still evolving and that the IDF is making "big efforts, operational and intelligence, to locate the soldier".
The 72-hour ceasefire had already broken down this morning but the reported kidnapping of the Israeli soldier will raise the stakes in the conflict to a completely different level.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday condemned a reported Hamas attack on Israeli soldiers in Gaza as a violation of the newly reached humanitarian ceasefire and called for the release of an abducted Israeli soldier.
"That would be a rather barbaric violation of the ceasefire agreement," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on CNN.
Earnest called on Hamas to release the Israeli soldier. He said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had already spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the next steps in the Gaza crisis.
The United States urged the international community to condemn the Hamas ceasefire violation in the "strongest possible terms," Earnest said.

(12,047 posts)UNITED NATIONS (AP) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is blaming Hamas for violating a humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza and is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of an Israeli soldier reportedly captured after it started.
Ban urges both sides "to show maximum restraint and return to the agreed 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire that tragically lasted such a brief period of time," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
The U.N. chief condemns Hamas' reported violation of the cease-fire which "is likely to have very serious consequences for the people of Gaza, Israel and beyond," Dujarric said.
"Such moves call into question the credibility of Hamas' assurances to the United Nations," he said
