I hate to speculate, and could easily be wrong.....
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5370867
REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
YOUR COMMENTS
Depression induced suicide is not something to make jokes about, especially when it's a sex joke.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Mon Aug 11, 2014, 08:16 PM, and voted 6-1 to HIDE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Should have left it at 'I hate to speculate'
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Generally that is the case for mainly lonely, depressed, sex starved teenagers but this is not the case with Robin Williams.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Ugh. Nasty and uncalled for, but I doubt it will be hidden even though I agree with the alerter 100% on this one.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Humor of this kind isn't going down well right now.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Dude, really?
Shhh. Don't speak ill.
Thank you.

(45,251 posts)have an organism. That is not suicide nor does the coroner presume suicidal intent.
Whether details are given the press or not, death by that method is ruled accidental death, not suicide via asphyxiation.
rbrnmw
(7,160 posts)This is so disrespectful.
MADem
(135,425 posts)That situation is never suicide, it's "accidental death."
When I hear asphyxiation, I think about garages and motor vehicles. But who really knows? He may have not intended to kill himself, he may have been under the influence of drugs and that impaired him in some fashion.
The poor guy just got out of rehab. He has had substance abuse issues for many years, now, that are no secret. He's also had a history of mental health problems. He's discussed some of this publicly.
It's just a sad situation. A shame for his family and friends left behind. I agree with your take, and think this thread is a bit too snarky, as well.

(14,180 posts)The sad part is that Mr. Williams struggled for years with severe depression, compounded by addiction. From the looks of your OP, you sound more upset that he isn't going to be around to entertain YOU anymore.
That is what people are upset about, and why we want this thread deleted.

(19,967 posts)People fortunate enough to have never had to deal with it in a loved one or themselves have a hard time understanding it, the disease that is.
Robin Williams was an amazingly talented and brilliant man who died from depression. It's the same as if he'd died from cancer or any other terminal disease that wasn't responding to treatment.
It's sad, it's a loss and it's difficult to process in our minds. Yet it's still a death from a disease which wasn't responding to treatment and killed the person afflicted with it.

(36,063 posts)DU has a strange track record with mental illness. As much as it dismay a significant portion of DUers, many use stigmatizing phrases and stereotypes as chauinistic tropes.
But, when dealing with death, even where mental illness is a factor, empathy and kinder, gentler remarks are safer.

(36,063 posts)we can't be free from the best intentioned still using stigmatizing language.
I suggest ridiculous rather than 'nuts'. Nuts is a classic stigmatizing term used to disparage others by associating them with mental illness. Ridiculous on the otherhand means meriting ridicule.
tenderfoot
(8,982 posts)Go back to 1628.
HereSince1628
(36,063 posts)It's a widely recognized issue, although not among many libertine free-speechers.
Most people on the left would not be too bothered by slightly modifying their behavior to help end discrimination of others. Stigmatizing language about the mentally ill is widely recognized as facilitating attitudes that foster discrimination.
Persons with mental illness face significant problems with discrimination and life, on average, 20 fewer years than the mentally well.
Are you so inconvenienced by choosing words with appropriate meanings, that you can't join the informed and caring that follow the AP Style Guide with respect to stigmatizing terms of the mentally ill?

(10,649 posts)Instead of some crass remark about this tragic death, you might try imagining what it must be like to be under such a weight of depression, in such a deep abyss, as to see no way out. The only human reaction to this is to feel profound sympathy and sadness for someone in those circumstances, as well as some respect and sympathy for the loved ones left behind.
