Confederate sympathizers protested the University of Mississippis rebranding efforts to minimize its racist past.
About 35 demonstrators carried Confederate battle flags Saturday morning through parts of Oxford, where university officials have decided to rename some campus streets and cut back on using the Ole Miss nickname.
Some say the nickname originated as a term used by slaves to refer to plantation owners wives, and university officials plan to limit its use to sports and spirit activities rather than academics. But the protesters say the university should honor its Confederate heritage instead of obscuring it.
How can you take a Confederate school built by Confederates in a Confederate state and say youre not Confederate? said Debbie Sible, who helped organize the protest. Its like my dog trying to dress up my cat.

(70,567 posts)I doubt if any of the protesters went to the U of Mississippi or even
college for that matter.
Confederates were fighting for 2 things; The right to keep people as
slaves and for the destruction of the United States of America.
Ole' Miss comes from "slave talk" where Ole' is a contraction of the
words owners as in, "that is the owners mansion." (just learned that)

(13,468 posts)When various statistics by state are released, we in Kentucky say "thank God for Mississippi".
They will never succeed though, it wouldn't take these Confederates long to figure out that would mean two of their state schools leaving the South Eastern Conference. The minute their tiny brains turned toward football season, that would be a NO!
