We've been down this road before. Control of the government, control of the media, legalized propaganda against the citizenry, unending war against a nebulous villain and the torture, beating and killing of those who would challenge it.

When he was a little boy, his parents had him locked up in a real jail for a short time to teach him a lesson for some minor offense. He never got over it, and even refused to ever drive a car, for fear of being pulled over by a policeman. Gives new insight to the scene in Psycho where the girl gets pulled over by the cop.
