Man crashes Lamborghini 6 hours after winning it
A Utah man who won a $380,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store chain's contest says he crashed the sports car six hours after he got it.
KSL-TV reports the lime green Murcielago Roadster will head to a Las Vegas body shop Wednesday for repairs, days after David Dopp won it from Maverik stores'"Joe Schmo to Lambo" contest.
Dopp says he was taking friends and family on joy rides Saturday when the vehicle hit ice or gravel and started spinning. The car hit some fence posts and came to rest in a field.
The Lamborghini has front-end damage, a punctured wheel and scratches along the passenger side.

(73,772 posts)I would have never driven it, but sold it right way
I could've bought a house and a Caddy for that amount of money and still have a lot left over.

(114,615 posts)had already happened by the time I was announced the winner. After all, how often do we peasants ever get that kind of an opportunity?
But hell yes, I'd have driven it outside town on back roads to lessen the chance of damage and there's no way I'd have floored it in areas where there are ice and/or loose gravel. That's just stupid.
And then I'd have sold it. And then bought a new econocar. And had my house completely redone while I vacationed someplace warm and beachy. Martinique sounds nice. And then come back and given the rest to charity because I really don't need the money these days.

(33,688 posts)driven an exotic car before.
1. Nothing with tires more than a foot wide should be driven on snowy/icy roads. The car ain't built for that. A friend's daughter severely dinged one of his Ferraris a few years ago and she was just poking along up in the foothills near their Utah home and hit some black ice. Ka-runch!
2. Cars like that are to be approached with as much respect as you would give a live bomb until you are used to them. Then they can be approached with the respect you would give a hand grenade. I drove the above friend's Ferrari 550 Maranello a couple of years ago in the foothill roads outside of Provo in perfect weather. I am a car guy but very cognizant of road conditions. It so happened this day was 60 degrees, bright and sunny. My friend egged me up to 95 in the thing, which was fine. I realized in the space of the first few blocks that the car would only bite me if I did something monumentally and deliberately stupid. It felt like the hand of Jupiter himself was pushing that Ferrari down on the road. Quite exhilerating and enjoyable.
3. Giving some schnook off the street a Lambo is like giving a wino an AK-47 and a box of ammo. No good is going to come of it. They should have at least made the guy take some performance driving lessons before handing over the keys.

(13,409 posts)I've seen some very wide all season tires that do the job very well. I had 11.5"s on my GTI and it handled snow with aplomb. Also, you'll find a number of trucks with very wide rear tires that have no issue with the snow. If the tread isn't meant for poor weather, you're going to have issues in the snow regardless of tire width.

(33,688 posts)The Lambo probably had Michelin or Pirelli Supercar tires on it, which are made for strafing the Autostrada at 300 kmh in perfect weather. Not so good for Utah in December.

(13,409 posts)And I'm guessing that it had AWD considering that it's a Murcielago and only the limited editions are availablw with RWD. That's another common mistake, thinking that having AWD means that your car is suitable for icy weather. For most cars, that may be true, but certainly not all.
it was too much car for him

(8,570 posts)But that's just me. I've never driven a Lambo but an ex girlfriend of mine had a Corvette convertible and I didn't particularly enjoy driving it. It didn't handle anywhere near as well as you might expect and getting in and out was a hassle. It looked bad assed in the driveway, though.

(10,348 posts)A "Cars & Coffee Crasher", all the way. It's not the camo, either! There is a website devoted to the phenomenon - wreckedexotics.com.
It pains me to watch these properly funded cretins do this - Mostly because I'm a lifelong broke-ass racer, who builds stuff this fast for myself and my friends. There are 100 different cars/trucks that I'd rather have than the Lambo. The first 2 - a good "daily", and and an older Ford pickup - would cost less, together, than 10% of the Lambo.
