Nobody shot Kate Meckler

In fact, Kate Meckler is going to do 40 hours in a soup kitchen. Now let's just say for a moment that Michael Brown stole the cigars; they were -- what? $50 absolute tops if they were good cigars? Let's compare that to Kate Meckler:

A high-flying New York real estate broker has admitted to stealing $1,700 worth of designer clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Police arrested Kate Meckler, an agent for the New York-based firm Warburg Realty, in April after security staff saw her take a top, a pair of jeans and a jacket from the exclusive Manhattan department store without paying, according to the prosecutors' criminal complaint.

Meckler, who sells multimillion-dollar luxury homes in Manhattan, was originally charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, according to the complaint.

But she pleaded guilty Monday to a single count of disorderly conduct, the district attorney's office said

By the way: $1,700 =40 hours in a soup kitchen. That's $42.50 an hour. Nice work if you can get it.

http://crime.about.com/b/2008/03/25/barbie-bandits-sentenced-for-bank-robbery.htm

Two Georgia women who became known as the "Barbie Bandits" have been sentenced for their part in the $11,000 robbery of grocery store bank branch office on Feb. 27, 2007 in Acworth, Georgia. One of the former strippers was sentenced to serve two years in jail, but the other received a probation-only sentence.

Ashley Miller, who was convicted of theft and drug distribution charges, was sentenced to the maximum of 10 years, but only has to serve two years in prison. She also must pay $2,500 in restitution. Miller had marijuana and a large quantity of ecstasy pills on her when she was arrested.

Heather Lyn Johnston, who plead guilty to robbery and drug charges last August, was sentenced to 10 years probation with community service. She will also have to pay a $2,000 fine and pay $2,500 in restitution
.

They weren't shot either. One received "probation-only'

There is absolute proof Meckler stole $1,700 worth of apparel. I can't speak to whether she obeyed pedestrian traffic laws once she left Saks. In any event, she was not shot.

Although the story out of Ferguson seems to shift every couple of hours for some reason, for now they've settled on Michael Brown was "blocking traffic" walking in the middle of the street. That's apparently a capital offense in Missouri (and you thought Singapore was strict). So as long as Ms. Meckler was careful to stay on the sidewalk and cross only at the corners with the light, there was very little the constabulary could do except simply arrest her.

If Kate Meckler did violate pedestrian traffic laws, would the NYPD have responded differently?
