Man killed in road rage shooting in Colerain Township

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -
Colerain Police believe it started here somewhere along Colerain Avenue. 20-year-old Anthony Griffin had some type of altercation with another driver 26-year-old Jeremy Hardman.

Police say Hardman then followed Griffin to his girlfriend's home in the 3200 block of Niagara Avenue.

Mike Harris says he watched it all happen right here in his front yard. His sister's boyfriend, the father of her unborn son, Anthony Griffin shot and killed by a stranger.

"Over something so freaking stupid. I was just trying to get everyone to calm down. Tried to just deescalate it. No one really thought that would happen," said Harris.

Harris says Griffin pulled up to his house just before 1 a.m. Griffin's two sisters were in the car and an angry driver was hot on his heels.

"Evidently, the guy had pulled up. They had words. Then, he turned around and came back and they had words again and on and on it seemed to go. Nobody wanted to let it go," said James Love, Public Information Officer for the Colerain Police Department.

That is when Love says 26-year-old Jeremy Hardman pulled a gun and shot Griffin from his car. Right now, police say there are no indications the two knew each other and no indications of any crime.

Defend that gun nutters. This is exactly what I am afraid of every time I get in the car, some gun nutjob gets upset because he thought I looked at him the wrong way or didn't let him cut me off on the freeway.

I had pulled out of a stop light as a city truck pulled around the corner in front of me and suddenly decided to park in the middle of the street without any warning. I was able only to make the quickest of checks of my mirrors before dodging to avoid causing a pileup, and thought I had enough room before the folks behind me, so I jumped lanes while speeding up to clear out more space behind me to prevent anyone hitting me there. Thought I'd managed it well, got about halfway down the street, and suddenly this small silver car whipped past me, then into my lane and slammed on its brakes. I managed not to rear end it, and took it as a message that he must have been back in the other lane, and since I didn't see him, I'd forced him to slam on his brakes.

But then as I changed lanes, he swerved in front of me, and kept doing that while pumping his brakes, apparently trying to get me to run into him. I finally signalled as I was about to reach a corner, and he turned quickly down that street, so I kept going straight and accelerated away from the nut. Damned if he didn't show up behind me a minute or so later, and followed me for the next several miles. I was totally freaking out at this point, wondering when he's stop following me. We got out to a major intersection, and I was finally trapped by a light.

He got out, stormed up to my car and started pounding on the window and screaming that I'd 'run him off the road' (which to this day, I don't see how I could have - it was a four lane road, and if he was in the lane I'd dodged into, he would have had to either simply slam on his brakes, or dodge into the lane with the stopped truck I was swerving to avoid, or swerve into one of the two empty oncoming lanes. We'd been coming out of a stopped traffic light, so I don't see how he would have had time to build up enough speed that in trying to avoid me, he would have crossed two lanes and gone off the road) and when I said I didn't even see him, screamed 'bullshit several times, and said I sped up and dodged him', at which point I amended it to 'I didn't see you UNTIL you sped around me and started slamming on your brakes ahead of me'.

Thankfully the light changed, so I started driving again, and he ran back to his car, jumped in, and STARTED FOLLOWING ME AGAIN for the half mile or so to the highway entrance I needed. There was no way I was going to play his mad road rage games on the highway, so I pulled off onto the side right by the exit, and thankfully, he finally drove up the ramp and left.

But if he'd had a gun, I'm dead certain I'd be dead now.
