Just like government workers weren't either, until they didn't pay them, though they quickly resumed their default understanding. This is what happens when you are voiceless and defenseless. While unions have their share of corruption (name anything involving lots of money and there you will find it), when workers are given the power and voice of a large collective, inequality is reduced. The Republicans can protect businesses monopoly on cheap labor by constantly vilifying unions. With the eager help of the MSM they have been successful at making union members anti-union. With no real labor opposition, the story will always be "Take it or leave it!"
