Why Was Stonehenge Built?

Last edited Tue Aug 26, 2014, 05:31 PM - Edit history (1)

I mistakenly posted this earlier in the Late Breaking News forum. Per the host's (Don Viejo's) suggestion, I'm reposting it here for our anthropologically and archaeologically-oriented friends to enjoy. (I know very little about the field or subject, so am posting without substantive comments.)

Humans have marvelled at the majesty of Stonehenge for thousands of years, but the famous landmark’s original purpose has remained a mystery.

Now, a new technique has revealed 15 previously unknown Neolithic monuments around the mysterious monument in Wiltshire.

And one archaeologist thinks they could provide evidence that the stone circle was at the heart of a busy heathen processional route over 4,000 years ago.

. . . .

They discovered evidence of 15 unknown and poorly-understood late Neolithic monuments, including other henges, barrows, pits and ditches, which could all harbour valuable information about the prehistoric site.

I don't get why people are shocked by this or the Pyramids. People had A LOT of time on their hands for thousands of years.

Fascinating site. Interesting to hear about the others.

Of course, one must not neglect the chalk sculptures:

Over the years it looks like it does now and now everyone goes Stonehenge WFT is it?
