Pro-Palestinian March Draws 500 in Downtown Detroit
DETROIT (AP) -- About 500 people have marched in downtown Detroit in support of Palestinians and against U.S. support for Israel.
Sunday's demonstration came during the Islamic Society of North America's annual convention at nearby Cobo Center. Ex-President Jimmy Carter addressed the group Saturday.
March participant Mohammad Salam of Livonia tells the Detroit Free Press that protesters seek an end to Israel's blockade of Gaza. The newspaper says marchers waved Palestinian flags and carried signs saying, "Free Palestine, let Gaza live."
The latest fighting between Israel and Hamas-led Gaza left about 2,200 people dead, the vast majority of them Palestinians.
American Muslims for Palestine spokeswoman Kristin Szremski tells The Associated Press that organizers want an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. She says about 16 groups sponsored the march.
