A fleet submarine lost on its first war patrol. His loss was responsible for my lifelong interest in the silent service in WWII. It was the most dangerous venture of the war and every single person involved in it was a volunteer. However, they single-handedly brought Japan to their knees, sinking millions of tons of shipping. A world class navy is useless if it has no fuel.

It is an incredible story. Google "Mush Morton" some day, or the "USS Wahoo", an absolutely amazing man, and an amazing boat. He basically wrote the book on WWII submarine warfare strategy.
