In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston marathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers. However, Switzers boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29.

(82,849 posts)Women's war on the established order has been going on for decades! It isn't the Republican war on women at all! Great catch showing just how hostile women have been through the years to the order established by their betters like Jock Semple. The flag is falling, and it's up to Mitt Romney to catch it.

(23,864 posts)...idea that the Boston Marathon was all male and I certainly had no idea that a woman running it would be physically attacked.
I dialed up The Google and one of the first videos that came up was this marvelous little interview with Switzer. I encourage you all to view it, it's just 3 short, remarkable minutes.
VIEW IT HERE at PBS.
She gives an account of the physical attack she endured, her voiceover guiding us through the full series of pictures taken during it. I think you will also find it a bit difficult not to become emotional watching those images.
All...just for the right to run a foot race.
It wasn't until 1972 that women were allowed to enter the Boston Marathon.
+1 to the OP.

(4,840 posts)anybody born after 1967 would probably never heard of Kathrine Switzer.
Nay
(12,051 posts)that occurred solely to put women in their place. And to think that, 50 years later, within many people's living memory, women still have to remind people that this shit happened every day! And that women who lived through that stuff may not have such a sanguine view of men and their recent attempts to put us right back in the shit. Younger women seem to think it could never happen to them, but us older women know better.

(111,339 posts)We've had to fight out way into everything that a bunch of old boys thought was theirs, exclusively.
That applies to everything we have including the vote.

(44,397 posts)I guess from our women parts bouncing around inside. lol. Women's parts were used to keep us from
doing all sorts of things. it was assumed that women couldn't withstand g-forces so we should be astronauts.

(65,616 posts)Another moment (out of millions) in Horrednously Embaressing Things White Guys Did Throughtout History. More proof that women have had to scratch their way to the top of every concevable profession and sport.
How totally fucking embaressing for Jock...Jock?
If I was his kids, I would be so ashamed of my father. Even to this day.
