Apparently do not care if workers are low paid. Cheap prices and products are more important than workers' value.

(111,255 posts)They drove the small stores out of business ages ago.
They finally managed to close down the union grocery close to me after a valiant 10 year fight.

(7,300 posts)And shop at Walmart because it's about the only place I can afford or get a USB headset for under 10 bucks and that's close enough for me to limp to. I hit a dollar store first but sometimes I have to shop at Walmart because it's too far to limp to the dollar store and the Amarillo bus system blows. I hate it but that doesn't mean I don't care. If you like, I've an even broader brush you can use.

(1,712 posts)numerous reasons, I've never by extension applied that to those who shop there. I'm sure your story is not unique, and you've got to do what's best for you.

(7,300 posts)Yes, most people don't care in my opinion but there are those like myself that do care. If I could I'd never shop there again. In fact, not too long ago I didn't shop thereat all for years. Times have changed though. Thanks again for the good wishes!

(7,627 posts)People would boycott businesses that they feel do not meet certain standards. In practice many do not have that luxury. When you are on social security or unemployed you try to feed your family by shopping where your dollar may go further. I am fortunate enough to be able to do what you are suggesting. I also recognize that many less fortunate can not. I won't blame them for trying to make ends meet. They can contribute other ways such as going out to vote.

(34,069 posts)For far too many, cheap prices - including those at Walmart - make the difference between being able to put food on the table and pay the rent.
Are you really suggesting that people who are barely making ends meet are shopping at Walmart because they "do not care" - and that they ought to bite the bullet and go without food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc. based on a principle that won't pay the bills?

(466 posts)I'm a senior citizen who is trying to survive on S.S. Not easy;but where I live there isn't much difference in grocery prices wherever I shop. Safeway, Kroger, Wal-Mart,they're all sky-high. In my case I find that Wal-Mart actually is higher overall. They rave on about their low prices, but they are terrible. I try to avoid them like the plague, and seldom go there. Their entire "good ol' boy, just plain folk"routine makes me me queasy. It's like a visit to redneck hell.

(16,104 posts)Price comparisons over and over demonstrate if we would shop elsewhere, we can get lower prices and save money.
When you crush all the competition and are the only store in town, why can't they charge higher prices since there is no where else to go? They even have higher prices in the same cities in certain parts of town where there is less competition, and less mobility.
You are right -- if you die and go to Hell, you'll probably see a Walmart greeter when you get there!
