Henry David Thoreau was NOT a workaholic. Some people said he was lazy. But he supported himself by the work of his hands only for two years at Walden Pond in Massachusetts. The result of his experiment in essential living was WALDEN one of the most influential and popular books in the history of our country.
Thoreau felt sorry for the typical worker of his day, who had to labor so hard that he couldn't enjoy life. He proved that one could get by with a minimal amount of labor and devote the rest of his time to more enjoyable pursuits. It helped that he didn't have a wife and kids.
Here are a couple of selected quotes.
... I am convinced, both by faith and experience, that to maintain
one's self on this earth is not a hardship but a pastime, if we will
live simply and wisely; ... It is not necessary that a man should
earn his living by the sweat of his brow, unless he sweats easier than I
do.
... I found that, by working about six weeks in a year, I
could meet all the expenses of living. The whole of my winters, as well
as most of my summers, I had free and clear for study.
WALDEN is a great book, and it's the reason I chose Henry David Thoreau for my avatar.

Unfortunately we live in a throw away society today, more defined by our trash and forgetting the true meaning of treasure. Thanks for the link.
