(3,249 posts)... reduce the number of passengers per flight, open up the seating, and require passengers to dress in at least business casual to board. Kinda like it was in the '50's. Then maybe I could tolerate flying again.

(6,096 posts)for my life. They NEED TO make flying comfortable and forgot the fucking bottom line....
and take out some of those tiny little seats.

(3,249 posts)... if there were a little higher class of passengers? Raising the price and having a dress code could encourage that.

(32,641 posts)trouble? The humble, down to earth passengers (from all economic backgrounds) are not behind all these fights.

(3,249 posts)But the few altercations I did observe back in the days when I flew a lot, were caused by uncouth people in coach with an attitude. I don't ever remember seeing a problem in First Class.

(12,799 posts)That is so awesome! What was the dress code for air flight back in day, pops? As for me, if I can't wear blue jeans, I don' wanna go.

(3,249 posts)most people I flew with wore a suit and tie. That loosened up very quickly after the airline deregulation and the masses started flying. I flew back and forth to Europe a few times in the early 70's and still most people wore jackets and ties.
I spent a lot of time in Asia, but most of my flying there was in uniform on military or MAC charter flights and we always wore Class A or the old TW uniforms. No one traveled in BDU back then.
Since the 90's I was back and forth to Europe again and the standards had dropped considerably. But I was senior enough and a frequent flyer so I was almost always upgraded to at least Business Class. There were some suits and ties, but not as many. Many folks just wearing casual, even jeans, but at least not raggedly shorts or jeans with holes. Even I didn't wear a tie anymore, but usually wore a sports jacket (more pockets) and a collared shirt. And most of the people in business class don't stink nor do they carry on a garlic pizza to eat on the flight.
Yeah, I'm old and crotchety.

(12,799 posts)Of those several times in economy class, can't remember any smelly people.
I'm thinking back to the time you're remembering so fondly. When, exactly, was smoking banned for air travel? Oh yea, 1990 -- for flights under six hours. So what was that you were saying about stink? (I speak as a smoker who knows that the scent is not pleasant.)
You may be old and crotchety, but I do find your admittedly classist views rather offputting.

(3,249 posts)... but the exceptions seem concentrated and more numerous in some classes. You can probably call that classist, if you wish, from a couple of different aspects.

(34,131 posts)No, not the bicycle seat things - air lair chairs!
With these things, there is no intrusion on another passenger's space - and the airlines can still pack the planes full because the seats are stacked.
I could handle them if they were a more neutral color - I really dislike purple.

(8,692 posts)I have been on flights where brawls have broken out (British Airways). I have been on a flight where a flight attendant punched another flight attendant (TWA). I have been on a flight where a drunk guy pissed on the floor (American)
If those flights weren't worthy of diversions why the hell are assholes fighting over this worthy all of the sudden?

(21,675 posts)i'm a knitter and it's pretty difficult to recline and knit. very tiring on the arms. knitting woman should have kept her seat up. when i fly, i usually take some knitting too, but always go for the aisle seat, so i can have one elbow out and more room.

(3,252 posts)If reclining upsets the person behind you, it's the fault of the airline putting the seats too close together.
