Why do you work?

Or to be more specific - how much does earning a salary motivate you in your job?

I am 100% a mercenary - I am gratified that what I do has some societal benefits, but I work because they pay me.

I would not work, but I would travel extensively and do some volunteer work. Traveling would be big time priority. I have been to 47 countries, but never really long enough to get a full experience in most.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a job that would pay me to loll around reading good books. Which is what I do now.

My paycheck was always a factor, but I truly love my work.

Now that I'm past retirement age and can take income that is equal to my active income, I still work and intend to until I can't.

I retired early at age 56 14 years ago. I still work selectively as a free lancer within my former field of employ. Mostly to keep from getting rusty and to keep up with the latest advancements in said field. My current work scenario is a major improvement over the dog-eat-dog conditions set up by my former full time employer. They were unrelenting in their quest for doing more for less and for busting the union.

If you're a living organism on this planet, somehow, someway, you have to work to survive. That's just built into life.

As for working what we call a job? Yeah, because they pay me.

I have been in the technology industry for 20 years and for the past three I have been with the same company which is an amazing company to work for. Very progressive leadership and employees are treated exceptionally the best thing is that we are working with cutting edge technology in an industry that is still very young and exploding.

When I got to the point that my pension plus social security came out the same as a paycheck, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I worked since I was 15.

On edit: When I was working, it was for the health care benefit mostly.
