Study shows Fracking contaminates 82% of nearby Drinking Water

http://www.whiteoutpress.com/articles/q32013/study-shows-fracking-contaminates-82-of-nearby-drinking-water/

...a new study from Duke University and a group of German biogeochemists proves that a staggering 82% of homes near fracking sites have drinking water contaminated with exponentially elevated levels of methane gas and other deadly biproducts of the controversial drilling procedure.

For instance, the Vice President promoted fracking for Ukraine, as one of the interesting ways the US "would help Ukraine" after the coup. Now I know it was part of a plan to frack over there so we wouldn't have to frack just over here.

Then, Vice President Biden's son's company just got a huge new contract doing fracking. Again, happenstance that helps the small water drinkers of the planet.

US sends experts to tackle Ukraine's energy needs

By Laura Barron-Lopez - 04/22/14 03:12 PM EDT

EXCERPT...

On Tuesday, an interagency expert team arrived in Kyiv to help the Ukrainian government secure reverse natural gas flows from its European neighbors. Later in the week, the team will visit Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia to work on the details of the arrangement.

"And as you attempt to pursue energy security, there’s no reason why you cannot be energy secure. I mean there isn’t. It will take time. It takes some difficult decisions, but it’s collectively within your power and the power of Europe and the United States," Vice President Joe Biden said on Tuesday during a meeting with Ukrainian legislators. "And we stand ready to assist you in reaching that. Imagine where you’d be today if you were able to tell Russia: Keep your gas. It would be a very different world you’d be facing today."

In May, U.S. technical experts will meet with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to help Ukraine develop a public-private investment project to increase conventional gas production from existing fields. The increase in production will help Ukraine build up its domestic energy supply.

The team will also work with the Ukrainian government on measures that will provide fast and environmentally-friendly implementation of fracking for shale gas, in line with contracts signed in 2013.

I very much appreciate you helping me see that VP Biden may not have used the term "fracking," per se, but it's clear that's what he meant. Then, there' the matter of his son getting into the fracking business in Ukraine, of all the geological formations in all the world.

Cheney set thet fracking secrecy policy, way back when.

"Scientific advisory panels at the Department of Energy and the EPA have enumerated ways the industry could improve and have called for modest steps, such as establishing maximum contaminant levels allowed in water for all the chemicals used in fracking. Unfortunately, these recommendations do not address the biggest loophole of all. In 2005 Congress—at the behest of then Vice President Dick Cheney, a former CEO of gas driller Halliburton—exempted fracking from regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Congress needs to close this so-called Halliburton loophole, as a bill co-sponsored by New York State Representative Maurice Hinchey would do. The FRAC Act would also mandate public disclosure of all chemicals used in fracking across the nation."

-- Scientific American, Nov. 2011, "Safety First, Fracking Second"

Maybe after the middterms we'll see action on full disclosure of chemicals. Right.

He does explain how there are new technologies that would help Ukraine become energy independent of Moscow.

Vice President Joe Biden Promotes U.S. as Fracking Missionary Force On Ukraine Trip

STEVE HORN
Wed, 2014-04-23 12:18

During his two-day visit this week to Kiev, Ukraine, Vice President Joe Biden unfurled President Barack Obama's “U.S. Crisis Support Package for Ukraine.”

A key part of the package involves promoting the deployment of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) in Ukraine. Dean Neu, professor of accounting at York University in Toronto, describes this phenomenon in his book “Doing Missionary Work.” And in this case, it involves the U.S. acting as a modern-day missionary to spread the gospel of fracking to further its own interests.

SNIP...

Gas “Support Package” Details

Within the energy security section of the aid package, the White House promises in “the coming weeks, expert teams from several U.S. government agencies will travel to the region to help Ukraine meet immediate and longer term energy needs.”

That section contains three main things the U.S. will do to ensure U.S. oil and gas companies continue to profit during this geopolitical stand-off.

1) Help with pipelines and securing access to gas at the midstream level of production.

“Today, a U.S. interagency expert team arrived in Kyiv to help Ukraine secure reverse flows of natural gas from its European neighbors,” the White House fact sheet explains. “Reverse flows of natural gas will provide Ukraine with additional immediate sources of energy.”

2) Technical assistance to help boost conventional gas production in Ukraine. That is, gas obtained not from fracking and horizontal drilling, but via traditional vertical drilling.

As the White House explains, “U.S. technical experts will join with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and others in May to help Ukraine develop a public-private investment initiative to increase conventional gas production from existing fields to boost domestic energy supply.”

3) Shale gas missionary work.

“A technical team will also engage the government on measures that will help the Ukrainian government ensure swift and environmentally sustainable implementation of contracts signed in 2013 for shale gas development,” says the White House.
