About Robin Williams....

I haven't talked much about what we all lost since his passing. Very hard to do until I got some time to grieve. I don't know how his friends that got a camera stuck in their face that night did it.

We bought "The Bird Cage" on Blu-ray a couple weeks before he decided to exit stage left. I know it was stage left because his politics leaned way left. We watched it about a week before the kind of day you always remember where you were when you got "the news". I am so glad we did. Anything of his we watch now will feel a little different than before.

Marta and I got the shock headline as I was reading the DU. Kudos to LBN. There was a quick reply it was another net death hoax. Whew. Then coverage of his passing became convincing. It was another 10 minutes before it started to get TV coverage. We went with MSNBC.

Very few stars touch us in the way the characters Mork, Mrs Doubtfire, Genie, etc., all did. Marta and I took the kids to see "POPEYE" more than once. Like many fans, for us it would become a multi-decades long quest see his latest film, guest appearance, or E.T. special.

He wasn't just funny. He was fun. He often pushed the limits and expanded one to perhaps a new point of view. Seeing someone we identify with so closely play a gay character in "Bird Cage" certainly opened doors in minds that had always before been closed to LGBT individuals.

Deep down I think my favorite role was one that is little known and the critics hated. But what do they know. I took my mom to see "Jakob the Liar" in first run. Concentration camps are a dark subject. Showing the audience the condemned were real people can be tricky. His statement on waterboarding is undeniable. Again he was giving us his view without preaching from a pulpit. It was more like one friend to another offering us his simple point of view. I've watched Jacob 3-4 times since he passed away.

More on Jakob and waterboarding below.

We have learned so much about his off screen generosity in the last few weeks. Causes that concerned people like being homeless and or hungry. Making sure the crew behind the camera around him were treated well. An all around good egg. Didn't Mork land here in an egg?

Most agree he left us way too soon. Be thankful he left so much behind to remember him. Drama is easy, comedy is hard. So is getting over the fact he didn't reach out to someone close to him for help before his final moments. I hope he found what he was looking for.

But the lines he uses such as Carpe Diem, etc. were so deep and there was so much emotion, I found it hard to watch knowing he decided to end it all. I was so very moved by his choices in film. One of my favorites was "What dreams may come". But I know I cannot watch it yet. I wouldn't be able to see through the tears!

I haven't seen Jacob. I might need to wait a while before I try to see it. Thankyou for posting this.

One of my husband's favorite movies. I don't think I have the strength or the courage ever to see it a second time. Awesome and fearsome - magnificent and terrifying at the same time. Too many disquieting and seriously unsettling themes it makes you face. Especially knowing how his own movie ended.

Birth Name Robin McLaurin Williams
Height 5' 7" (1.7 m)

Mini Bio (1)
Robin McLaurin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, a great-great-grandson of Mississippi Governor and Senator Anselm J. McLaurin. His mother, Laurie McLaurin (Janin), was a former model from Mississippi, and his father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams, was a Ford Motor Company executive from Indiana. Williams had English, German, French, Welsh, Irish, and Scottish ancestry.

Robin briefly studied political science, before enrolling at Juilliard School to study theatre. After he left Juilliard, he performed in nightclubs where he was discovered for the role of Mork on an episode of Happy Days (1974) and the subsequent spin-off Mork & Mindy (1978). Williams' wild comic talent involved a great deal of improvisation, following in the footsteps of his idol Jonathan Winters. There have been tons of them on so I guess I haven't reached the "Enough grieving" point yet. Being 60, I've had far too many friends check themselves out. Some I sort of understood b/c their lives we so fucked.
The others were like Robin. On the surface, they had everything to live for. Sometimes, there are things buried so deep under the surface that just drags one so low they can't see living another minute.
So sad

Dead Poets Society (my husband got it for me after watching me cry for two days. I had never seen it). Oh Captain, My Captain.
The World According to Garp - gawd, he was awesome in that.
Good Will Hunting - OMG, another masterpiece

and so many I have never seen of his. Jimanji and a couple I can't remember the names of.

Thanks for the thread. I was punched in the gut hearing of his death and I never met the guy. Very few celebrities I pay attention to and he was just one that I could never read about. I didn't want to know about his 'real' life because I was afraid he wouldn't live up to my expectations. I didn't want to intrude on his privacy as a human so never read the 'rags' about rumors and crap like that. To read what he did, post death, made me cry more. He was so special to me. He was so talented and so sincere in his comedy. I truly think he had a gift. Our Leonardo (di Vinci, of talent).

RIP Robin. Aug 11, 2014...

My mom didn't watch a lot of TV in her last years (her hearing wasn't so good) but I was expected to let her know when Robin Williams was going to be on Leno or Letterman or another talk show. She figured her neighbors could put up with her TV blaring once in a while she watched him.

I've certainly been upset by politician's deaths (like Wellstone) but, besides John Lennon (and maybe George Harrison - but at least he died of natural causes), I cannot remember when a celebrity's death has bothered me so much.

Couldn't finish it though. I thought it was quality work. But I read the Wikipedia plot and saw how dire it was. As we were mourning his death opted to segue to Robin Williams Live at the Met that we found on YouTube. Wise decision for us.

One thing I've noticed as we come across various projects... He was telling us everything about his state of mind. Everything. Sunday we watched "Mork Meets Robin Williams" from 1981. I swear it was an intervention by the writers. Nothing seemed to have changed in the 30 years that followed. Always giving. And always will.

Guess I was reading too fast again.

I wonder though, what will Williams be best remembered for?

The Genie? (Good choice though...)

"GOOOOOOOD MORNING, VIETNAM!!!"

Popeye?

Bicentennial Man?

I mean, John Wayne is best remembered as "The Duke," a cowboy, and Ronald Reagan having a chimp as a child.

He was a remarkable human being, actor and comedian. He had a very touching and special way of 'getting the message across' to an audience - either via comedy, drama or just plain being himself. Truly talented, kind, gentle, and generous.

I'm heartbroken that he's gone. And very angry at how his lovely daughter was treated by internet bullies after he was gone. How COULD they? Jeeze.

I've probably watched more of his films that many other actors - without even realizing it until he was gone. It's so sad. He was a gift to us.

He found what he was looking for: a release from his pain. That's what those who commit suicide really want. Not to stop their life, but to stop the pain. And knowing this about him is the most heartbreaking of all. Because if there was anyone who didn't deserve such pain, it was Robin Williams.

The one that published a picture of the Bush twins drunk off their asses?

After I watched "Man of the Year'" an awesome Robin Williams movie in which he runs for president and is just amazing....

The movie discusses computer election tampering which is rarely discussed by us on DU anymore much less anyone in Hollywood....

I began to really worry about him.

Comedians are the best way to get through to people, truth through humor, and he was the best.

Then I watched a youtube of him in England, making fun of Sarah Palin and the Bushies....and the horrible thought came to me 'Oh shit they are going to kill him'

He then began a tour called 'weapons of self destruction' all about the Bushes...but quickly had heart problems and needed surgery.

After he recovered, he limited his comedy on the Bushes. From Wiki:

After a six-year break, in August 2008, Williams announced a new 26-city tour titled "Weapons of Self-Destruction". He said that this was his last chance to make jokes at the expense of the Bush administration,

Williams was hospitalized in March 2009 due to heart problems. He postponed his one-man tour for surgery to replace his aortic valve.

By the time the show was staged, only a few minutes covered that subject.

Robin Williams had just finished several movies and would be about to go on the talk show circuit, Jon Stewart, Colbert where he would surely bring up the very recent past of the idiot Bushes at a time when Jeb is getting ready to run.

I saw this was going to happen, I am so sad there is nothing I can do to convince anyone so there is no point- go ahead and delete this if you must but I must speak my truth.

The corporate media that everyone instantly believed on this story is the same one that sold us the war in Iraq and is still lying about everything now.
