Watch 1000 Years of European Borders Change In 3 Minutes

http://www.viralforest.com/watch-1000-years-european-borders-change/

The whole world is watching the crisis in Crimea, and Russia faces off with the USA and European superpowers. The dispute centers around which country the territory should belong to, and it may seem shocking in today’s modern era, but the borders of Europe have never been solid. In this time-lapse video, you can see how 1000 years of European history plays havoc on the stability of the border we take for granted today.

This time-lapse video has never been more relevant. As the eyes of the world are fixed on events in Ukraine and Crimea, its good to have a little perspective on the ever-changing flux of borders throughout time. Very cool!

They seemed to break up the Austro-Hungarian Empire along about 1910 --which, if true, would have "slightly" altered what happened over the next several years.

They have the annexation of Sudetenland in 1936, and the German invasion of the Soviet Union about 1945, and we don't get to 'Occupied Germany' until 1959. I think they've produced a series of drawings, and not tried very hard to fix them to the precise years, so that rapid changes get shown over a longer period. With accuracy, I suspect this would show more periods of a bit longer stability, and more sudden changes.

That's mind-blowing. It really helps in understanding why so many are pissed off now about so many things in the past. I kept rooting for Poland - they got wiped out a few times and kept coming back!

and yeah, it was huge, and fairly powerful for a time, especially as the Holy Roman Empire was pretty disorganized at the time, and the Russians were just shaking off Mongol rule.

I was just talking about this with a friend from Mexico the other day. He lives in the USA now. I'm going to show this to him, so we can both get a better understanding of it. Thanks.

It will show changes to forests, prairies and wetlands from the time of the first settlers to urbanization, white flight suburban creep and agribusiness.

Or select "copy link location" and paste it into the url address bar and it will take you to it and you can bookmark it if that's what you wanted. You can also right click and "save image as" and save it to your computer.

I do like your trick of putting the link in the title section of the reply though. It took me 4 edits to get that stupid thing to not show up as the gif, or the broken link image. lol.

The Timurids conquer pretty much all of modern Turkey, leaving the Ottomans with only their European lands, and then disintegrate into a bunch of tiny states (that are eventually absorbed by the Ottomans) in the span of about 5 years.
