This story made my day, and my new band name is Satchmo's Mule.

The Nixon angle makes it even funnier.

(59,503 posts)I would not believe anything said by Roger Stone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Stone
The real question - if it happened how did Stone learn of it. He was, of course, a Nixon confidante, but presumably if true, all Nixon would have known is that he met Armstrong at the airport. This would mean that the ONLY one who would have known was Armstrong, but per this, he was concerned that he could have embarrassed the US. Would HE, when he escaped detection, have then told anyone? The "sourcing" that a jazz musician told another Nixon guy is pretty lame.
Not to mention, three pounds! I've never smoked pot, but remembered that Paul McCartney was arrested in Japan with a bit less than half a pound (I googled to check amount) -- and could have faced a smuggling charge as that was considered too much for personal use. As I said, I never smoked pot, so I could be very offbase. Not to mention, why would he even consider bringing pot into NYC -- I would bet it would not have been hard to find there.
Note that to some, this story diminishes Armstrong, while making Nixon more personable.

Sure. He wouldn't be a liberal, but compared to these nuts in the GOP now President Nixon would be considered a moderate - and not have a chance in hell of being nominated by the Ghoulish Old Party.

(65,357 posts)He was a paranoid, despotic guy, but in some ways, he was more liberal than our current corporate controlled Dem Party leadership.

(41,963 posts)Not really dissing your post, it was just an opening for one of my favorite lines. I'm pretty sure Nixon was diagnosable with a host of things I wouldn't want a president to have, but that's all Watergate under the bridge.

(8,812 posts)Although Nixon was petty and paranoid, he is portrayed as a victim of Watergate not its perpetrator.

(8,812 posts)An over-simplification of the argument, of course (the book is 500 pages long), but that's the basic idea.
Read "Family of Secrets" or "American Dynasty" (by Kevin Phillips) and I guarantee you will never, ever view the Bush clan in quite the same light. It's like reading a history of the Gambino family.

(27,804 posts)Wouldn't story like this, if true, be in MSM such as the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, WaPo?
According to the OP, Charles McWhorter was the one who told Nixon
"who heard the story from one of the jazz musicians traveling with Satchmo"
Why would one of the jazz musicians traveling with Sathmo risk getting Louie Armstrong in trouble by telling a Nixon aide about that?....Sounds very fishy to me.
Three POUNDS of pot?
..If it had been three OUNCES, I might be more willing to believe it
Three pounds of pot is what drug dealers carry, not jazz musicians
Consider the source....Roger Stone.

(41,963 posts)If you Google it you'll see it in a lot of places, and with some slight variation. But it's documented enough to relate, and too funny not to.

Meanwhile, I agree with you that "Satchmo's Mule" is a great band name.
