Wyo.)-Former Vice-President Dick Cheney To Speak At Wyoming Bar Convention

By: Kevin Larsen Posted at: 09/04/2014 02:31 PM

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Former Vice President Dick Cheney can be a polarizing figure even six years out of office.

The Wyoming State Bar invited Cheney, a prominent Republican with deep Wyoming ties, to be keynote speaker at its annual convention next week.

Some lawyers are objecting - both to Cheney's selection and to the bar's announcement of his appearance. It consisted of an unedited biography submitted by Cheney in which he criticizes President Barack Obama for weakening the United States' security posture.

Cheyenne lawyer and Democratic state legislator Mary Throne says she won't attend. She says she respects Cheney's public service but that she believes he's too political a choice for a state bar convention.

Others welcome Cheney's appearance - and say they'd have no problem if it were Obama who was speaking.

I am glad Rep. Throne won’t attend, but why would she say she respects Cheney’s service? Was it only because he was once VP?

Momentum to bring the freedom to marry to Wyoming is at an all-time high, with political leaders on both side of the aisle stepping forward to support marriage equality. Of those speaking out, House Minority Leader Mary Throne of Laramie County is one of the strongest legislative proponents of marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

Rep. Throne, a proud Democrat, believes that gay and lesbian couples in Wyoming shouldn’t have to wait any longer to share in the protections and respect that only marriage can provide. As a lifelong Wyomingite, she knows that freedom is a value that unites our state – and if we are to uphold our reputation as the Equality State, it’s time to secure the fundamental freedom for everyone to marry the person they love.

“In Wyoming, we believe in the Golden Rule — treating others as we would want to be treated ourselves,” Rep. Throne said. “I can’t imagine being told it’s illegal to marry the person I love. It’s time for gay and lesbian couples in Wyoming to share in the freedom to marry.”
