(95,243 posts)Seriously: this is what one 'team Putin' stalwart delivered himself of not so long ago....
"It is a personal hatred of Russia on the part of some . . .
Russian laws have insulted their life style, so they demand we fight a third World War to assuage their wounded pride.
I, for one, am not ready to get on that particular bandwagon.

A flat statement that laws establishing persecution of gay people are no more than 'insult to their life-style', and that gay people are pressing for WWIII to 'assuage their wounded pride'....
And from a while back, this from another:

"Or...he's one of, if not the greatest,
leader of our times. He protects his people wherever they are; he throws financial crooks in jail; he maintains a morality that suits the greatest percentage of his people;, and he likes cats."
Straight out endorsement of anti-gay legislation in Russia.
A jury hid that one....

(24,692 posts)Despite how often the poster and I disagree, I am surprised by the anti-gay statement. I thought the poster was, or at least pretended to be, a liberal. I missed it last Friday. Thanks for pointing it out.
The second poster with the post that got hidden does not surprise me.

(95,243 posts)This is one reason the most basic tool of good interrogation is simply to get someone started on talking, because sooner or later, once they do, they will just tell you all about it.
Support for Putin in the West is mostly based on an idolization of 'the strong man', and people afflicted with this almost invariably associate homosexuality with weakness, and in their hearts despise it accordingly. This is redoubled by most of them feeling themselves to be weaklings, which is why they suffer from the idolization of 'the strong man' in the first place; they seek to escape by vicarious identification.

(24,692 posts)is one I had not given a lot of thought to. Thanks for putting it into words.
When I thought about it and did a little research the connection does hold up historically and in the 21st century. Of course, the connection is not 100% in that there are some who admire the strong man leader while believing in gay rights, but the 'strong men' themselves almost often run anti-gay regimes.

(95,243 posts)There are some, for instance, who identify homosexuality, male homosexuality in particular, with strength, and view attraction to women as weakness. This was particularly common in the personalities like Rohm who attached themselves early to the S.A. and the various Freikorps, though hardly exclusive to those circles.
