Do you believe Russia when the say the Estonian security official was on Russian territory?

This could turn into a major diplomatic incident.

Estonia's foreign ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador over what it calls the abduction of an Estonian security official by "unidentified individuals from Russia" on the border.

A ministry statement said the incident had taken place inside Estonia on Friday, near Luhamaa border checkpoint.

The missing Estonian official works for the Estonian Internal Security Service.

Russia says it detained an Estonian security official on a "spying operation" on Russian territory.

Those Estonians are probing for Russian weak spots for the Estonian invasion of Russia. It all makes sense!

I have no idea what actually happened.

My question was about who you believe, Russia or Estonia.

They're saying two different things.

1. Estonian Internal Security Service spying on Russia during a time they are worried about Russian aggression.

2. Russia sneaking into Estonia to kidnap Estonian Security official because ... they are getting ready to conquer Estonia and want to get some information out of this guy?

#2 seems a bit out there. While #1 is perfectly reasonable on the part of Estonia (and, hence, Russia). So while I have no faith in Russia lately, in this particular case their position sounds a lot more likely.

A lot of organized crime has quasi-official protection in Russia. In Ukraine, a lot of the cross-border covert incursions were hand in hand with some sort of organized crime--either they used the same routes, had the same facilitators, or just out and out collaborated. Once you're in bed with Russian organized crime, you were in bed with the Russian-speaking org crime in the Donbas.

Internal Security with, as the Estonians are saying, border control would be dealing with this along the Est border.

If the IS guy had some information, if he was a threat, if he was just sufficiently annoying, then this would accomplish two things: Deal with the immediate threat and also let them know to stay away. That they can disable the border security and with relative impunity and some official cover do what they want. This is a cultural trait: with power comes freedom, not "svoboda," freedom from others' limits and restrictions, but volya, the ability to do what you want. I often think of "volya" as being more akin to imperial caprice. Svoboda is freedom from being a serf, for instance; volya is the freedom to beat your wife.

Truth is probably something in the middle.

1. If there was no NATO summit.

2. No Ukraine conflict of Russia supporting the rebels and western elements backing the pro-NATO elements of the Ukrainian government.

3. Business as usual.

This wouldn't even make it to the news. But Journalism has to be sensationalized.....
