Giant Shrimp-Like Creature Pulled From Water By Florida FishermanA Florida fisherman got more than he bargained for when he pulled an 18-inch-long shrimp-like creature from the water while doing some nighttime fishing from a dock this week in Fort Pierce, Florida, a coastal city about a two-hour drive north from Miami.
"Steve said the massive thing was about 18 inches long and striking its own tail, so he grabbed it by its back like a lobster," FWS wrote. "Scientists think it may be some type of mantis shrimp (which are actually not related to shrimp, but are a type of crustacean called a stomatopod), and continue to review the photos to identify the exact species."

(25,927 posts)Besides, I believe it's a separate species as suggested in the article. As an aside, I find it ironic that so many people consider crustaceans a delicacy, but the mere suggestion of eating insects - even in unrecognizable form - triggers a strong 'ick' response.

And this one is EIGHTEEN inches?
They rarely exit their homes except to feed and relocate, and can be diurnal, nocturnal, or crepuscular, depending on the species...Although some live in temperate seas, most species live in tropical and subtropical seas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans between eastern Africa and Hawaii...
So what are they doing in Florida waters, slumming?
I stand by my creative speculation, LOL!
