best friend: Loyal dog stays by his best pal's side to help the cheetah cub recover from surgery on his legs
The puppy called Raina was a tower of strength for her friend Ruuxa a cheetah cub
Ruuxa underwent surgery at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to fix a condition which had given him bow legs
Loyal Raina was right by the cheetah's side as he emerged from the anaethisia, according to zoo officials
After the operation officials said that Raina appeared very concerned about Ruuxa when she saw he was sleeping and she couldn't wake him
However, the little cheetah is now expected to make a full recovery

(53,661 posts)Animals flocked to me when I was growing up and many times later in life. Some people said the animals knew something about me I didn't know. I have a hard time putting down such things in words.
If an animal trusts and thrives around you, I reckon there must be something of worth, even if the human race does not see it. Thanks for the kind reply, although I'm not the OP writer.
And yes, it helps to see the world is not all in darkness and despair. The internet and media would have people think and moreover, to feel that way, in order to keep our spirits down and control us. So much FUD is tossed at us until our hearts go down to our feet.
Each day the sun rises and we are given the gift of the present, of being alive. We would be well-advised to actually live in the short time we're alloted on Earth.
Glad you enjoyed the animal story, too. People can learn unconditional love from animals. This is how people could be. Life is so much harder when there is no love.

(5,376 posts)Thanks, freshwest. This and the video of Robin Williams and Koko have cheered me and lifted my spirit. I like the Nez Perce quote. Not sure if it's one of Chief Joseph's, but every time I hear the tribe's story and his words, "I will fight no more forever", I get chills. Just had that same sensation when I read your words advising us to actually live in the short time we're allotted. Wise counsel indeed!
Best.

(39,030 posts)Cheetahs in captivity do much better paired with dogs. Cheetahs are skittish & nervous; dogs calm them & give them confidence. I'd much rather cheetahs be in the wild, but they're so endangered thanks to we sucky humans, sigh. Glad the little guy will be ok.

(3,163 posts)because he was a single birth. Cheetahs almost always abandon a single cub. He is being raised by the staff and the dog has been a constant companion almost from the day he was born.
It is common for cheetahs at Safari Park to have companion dogs to help keep them calm. They form very strong bonds.

(9,705 posts)I saw another cheetah at the same zoo walking with a golden retriever a couple of years ago. It's good to know they're not confined in cages all of the time, and they do form strong bonds with the dogs.
