Picnic with the wife.
Public service with a service organization.
Reading to poor kids.
Visiting shut-in elderly folks.
Etc., etc.
Sometimes, sports teach sportsmanship and teamwork, clearly not evident in this behavior. Professional sports are now just big business.
Maybe people should get off their asses and do something other than feed the team owners and developers.
Professional sports are a distraction, bread and circuses, overpriced commercialized stupidity.
Someone in this thread called the asshole a hero.

Rome
This phrase originates from Rome in Satire X of the Roman satirist and poet Juvenal (circa A.D. 100). In context, the Latin metaphor panem et circenses (bread and circuses) identifies the only remaining cares of a new Roman populace which cares not for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of his contemporary Romans. Roman politicians devised a plan in 140 B.C. to win the votes of these new citizens: giving out cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses", would be the most effective way to rise to power.
Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.
Juvenal here makes reference to the Roman practice of providing free wheat to Roman citizens as well as costly circus games and other forms of entertainment as a means of gaining political power. The Annona (grain dole) was begun under the instigation of the popularis politician Gaius Sempronius Gracchus in 123 B.C.; it remained an object of political contention until it was taken under the control of the autocratic Roman emperors.

Guess what? It tends to draw in a few assholes. They don't like when you stand, they don't like how you're sitting, they don't like when you cheer, they don't like the smell of your beer or your hot dog, they don't like the jersey you're wearing or the layers keeping you warm are blocking everything for them.

I have not been to an NFL game in many years. My brother brought his then ten year old son to an NFL game and tbere was a loud drunk in front of them. My brother did not confront the man, he did hoqever tell an usher and the drunk was escorted out. (2,931 posts)If you bought a ticket to a movie theater and someone was bouncing a beach ball around, obstructing your view, would you have the same attitude? What if you bought a $100 ticket to a live play?
Blocking the view in those circumstances is just as bad as blocking the view at a sporting event.
And to prevent any false comparisons like "sports games are noisy events whereas theaters are not" .... were talking exclusively about the view here, not noise levels.
uppityperson
(115,681 posts)NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)...but a random ball is such an offensive obstruction of view?
Further, where is the evidence that the ball was in play, that there was anything critical going on?
I don't think the obstructed view argument holds water. Community standards are different from event to event, so comparisons of the opera to an NFL game are pointless.
Come on, you can do better than that.
GummyBearz
(2,931 posts)The ball came within the area of his seat that he paid for... it was a distraction from the game so he popped it. Thats all that happened... no kids died in the making of this video, no dogs were kicked, nothing illegal happened. And yes, sports fans can be just as passionate about seeing the game as fans of live theater can be about seeing a show. And the tickets can cost the same. And you wouldnt be ok with a beach ball interfering with an opera. Feel free to quote which of those statements is factually wrong

If the ball goes on the ice (and it has) the home team could get a two minute penalty. Assholes who show up to hockey games with a beach ball wouldn't know that, because they are fucking morons who aren't there to watch the game but draw attention to themselves. Unfortunately it usually were the security guys who would grab or take the beach balls and remove them from the stands, most of the time crushing them. I recall seeing those used at Dodger Stadium as well...and if any got on the field, the Umpire would call a halt to the game and have the players either throw them back into the stands, or give them to Stadium Security.
