(115,610 posts)Strange, isn't it, how a lot of people who are smart enough (supposedly) to get through medical school or law school or some other graduate program turn out to be blithering idiots the minute they get into politics? There's this guy. And then there's Michele Bachmann and Louie Gohmert, who are actual lawyers and should have at least a passing familiarity with how the federal government works, but over and over again they have proved to be dumber than stumps.
I guess being blinded by ideology makes you forget everything you learned in school. In the case of Dr. Carson, being blinded by ideology has made it impossible for him to learn or understand anything outside his field. Go operate on somebody, doctor (preferably not me), and STFU.

(111,169 posts)Brilliant people with tunnel vision are fairly common, MIT was crawling with them.
Brilliant people who extend their brilliance far beyond their specialty are a lot less common. Dr. Carson is not one of them.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,610 posts)but it would be nice if they could extend some basic level of competence beyond their specialty. A brilliant surgeon should know that Obama is neither a communist nor a Nazi - and furthermore that by definition nobody can be both - since I know that and I am far from a brilliant surgeon - I'm just an ordinary schlub, a retired old lady with some cats and a garden and a computer. Shouldn't a brilliant surgeon who wants to be president know more about the world than the old cat lady down the block?

(111,169 posts)Carson has total tunnel vision. He is a brilliant specialist who has researched absolutely nothing outside his specialty. He's just saying stupid things he's heard at cocktail parties attended by lobbyists and pharmaceutical reps.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,610 posts)But I think he's getting his really dumbass ideas from Fox News and his fundie church. I still think it's sad when smart people are stupid.

It's all about keeping the people divided, angry, and focused on meaningless distractions and hyped up controversies like this, so that corporate policy can be quietly implemented on a bipartisan basis. The One Percent LOVE when the people are distracted by something outrageous someone in one party said about someone in the other.

(3,922 posts)If you want to understand what our country looks like after the republicans finish with it, read Dickens.
Only the richest survive, while the rest amble about on the streets looking for crumbs.
Hyperbole? Think "pay for performance" the standard that republicans are imposing on every publicly funded entity that they get their dirty hands on. Think of the criticism Obama took for the auto bailout - forget about the number of unemployed that would have resulted from the "let them die" crowd.
And yet, they continue to run in and possibly win elections. The propaganda they spread is amazing. They are destroying every good thing that this country once represented.
