Perhaps some here may disagree with me, that's fine. But I am finding a recent trend somewhat disturbing, and I thought I would speak my mind here and get some feedback,...
Maybe we are getting angry in the wrong place. Is there a particular reason why we are relying on the NFL to bring justice in this Ray Rice situation? The NFL is a business whose interests are entertainment and making money. They are not a justice system. Roger Goodell is not a judge. Their goal is not to solve our social problems. I understand sports leagues kind of live in their own little world, legally. But they are not designed to deal out punishments for criminal behavior.
It reminds me of this recent push on college campuses concerning rape allegations. Instead of having the justice system handle these issues, we are leaving it up to college administrative boards to make decisions on guilt and innocence and what's the proper punishment. Is there a reason we are doing that? Are we trying to bypass the justice system?
I view this as a potential problem because I'm not sure the constitution is being respected here. Guilt is supposed to be decided by the justice system that assures a fair trial and due process of law. Now there may be problems with this system, but we need to fix those problems....not depend on college administration staff, businesses, and sports leagues to pick up where the justice system failed.
Looking at that video...Ray Rice should be in jail. Why he is not has nothing to do with Roger Goodell. The questions we should be asking is why didnt the DA go forward with the case? Are the laws written badly? Was it because Rice was a sports star? These are more important questions. You can bash the NFL for a lot of things. But what the NFL does in this matter has no effect on 99.999% of us.
Just a thought...

(111,255 posts)and the law has been written to favor batterers in that way.
Quincy in Mass. had the first program in the country to address that. Abusers were arrested and charges filed by the cops if they had reason to believe abuse had taken place, like bruises, torn clothing, blood. It was completely independent of the victim.
Spousal abuse went way down.
