But I also believe that society must take a stand against such incredibly damaging and violent behavior as domestic violence. DV has been swept under the rug, and we have looked the other way for too long. Is Rice being made an example of? Yes, he is. Is it fair that others have not been treated as harshly? No. And that's the point, really. DV needs to be treated with the seriousness that it deserves. Those who abuse their partners or children should have no place in the NFL. Does that mean that they can never redeem themselves? Absolutely not. It does mean that their NFL career is over, however.

22. I agree. I hate football and the entire culture surrounding it.

I remember in high school how the football players were constantly paraded in front of us at frequent assemblies as if they were gods, while the all-female cheerleaders jumped and fawned over them. The misogyny of that ridiculous emphasis on football left a very bad taste in my mouth. Were were supposed to care, deeply, if one of our guys put some weird-looking ball through two pieces of wood, and we were supposed to be in despair if the other guys did. The whole time I was thinking: "Who gives a crap?"

Bottom line, Goodell is good for billionaires, bad for protecting women and their children.

Football is not just of interest to men. Millions of women are also fans and they are a tremendous source of money for the NFL and advertisers. The concept of football as a "guy thing" is over, or at least on it's way to being over.

There is no way that the NFL can afford to alienate women. Setting aside the morality of things, there is just too much money at stake. I don't think this issue is going to go away. It's an issue that provokes strong feelings in many women (and men), and no matter how much the NFL wishes this would just go away, it won't. They are being forced to confront it. I expect we will see Goodell eating his words on this.

PITTSBURGH -- Former Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison, who was fined heavily by Roger Goodell during his playing days, is firing back at the embattled NFL commissioner.

Steelers players were the only ones who didn't collectively vote in favor of the collective bargaining agreement that was approved in 2011 because of their unhappiness with Goodell -- and what they saw as his heavy-handed ways in meting out discipline.

The player-safety initiative that Goodell enacted in 2010 put him on a collision course with Harrison, one of the most feared players in the NFL. Harrison was fined a total of $120,000 for helmet-to-helmet hits or unnecessary roughness that season.

Goodell is a figurehead - the public face of the league as a whole. The owners pay him $28 million a year to take the heat they don't want to take themselves. He is a creature of the owners. His job is to be a PR shill for the NFL above all else. If the owners want him to stay he will stay. Period. His job is principally to deal with TV contracts, pimp the product and make sure the $$$ from media and the merch continue to roll in. Mollifying the public is also in his job description. As long as he does that, the owners do not care what he does.

A sensible person would look at the seemingly random punishments handed out to various players for off-the-field incidents and rightfully wonder why a guy who does PEDs get an 8-game suspension and a guy who fires up some ganja gets banned for a season. It's not about common sense, it's about the $$$ and "looking respectable" to the Teeming Millions.

That said, he should be fired and made to stand on his head in a bucket of live squid for 24 hours.
