Maura Healey D-Ma in a strong position to become the first openly gay attorney general

Political newcomer Maura Healey trounced party insider Warren Tolman for the Democratic nomination for state attorney general Tuesday night, putting her in a strong position to become the first openly gay attorney general in the United States.

Riding support from women’s and gay rights groups, Healey overwhelmed Tolman’s more traditional coalition of organized labor and elected officials in a battle of some of the most powerful constituencies in the party.

Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group, ran phone banks on Healey’s behalf out of its Washington headquarters. Stephen Peters, a spokesman for the group, called her victory “historic” in a statement Tuesday, saying it would send “a message of hope and empowerment to [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] citizens in Massachusetts and across the country.”

The poll came a week after Tolman dismissed a Healey attack as “unbecoming” in a Boston Globe debate. The remark was little noticed during the debate, but Healey’s supporters called “unbecoming” a sexist term and turned it into a fund-raising plea. Tolman apologized, but his backers called the broadside a cynical distortion of his comments and touted his record on women’s issues.

I voted for her because I think the AG's office has done a very good job for Massachusetts and its residents and she was Coakley's Asst Attorney Gen during that.

...In a speech at the Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel, Healey thanked supporters for backing her “underdog” campaign and pledged to fight for homeowners facing foreclosure, students bullied in school, and workers cheated out of wages.

“These are the fights that have driven this campaign from the beginning, these are the fights that matter, this is what this is about,” she said, to applause.

Tolman, appearing at the Stockyard Restaurant in Brighton, said he shares Healey’s values and will support her in the general election. “I’ve won elections and I’ve lost elections,” he said. “Winning is more fun. This one didn’t work out, but we move on.”

Hope the organized labor groups who supported Tolman will see their way to supporting her as well. The fight for 'workers cheated out of wages' is a big issue with labor, too.

I am looking forward to a win for both of them. I believe the Union will throw their support behind her.

Thank you, freshwest. Here's a good note too. The primary was Tuesday and I voted about 1pm on my way to work. I have never seen the place so crowded. Only 1 booth open when I got there. This being a primary for midterm elections and the people were out!
