And no, this itself is not satire.

On Monday, the US Senate voted 79-18 to start debate on Senate Joint Resolution 19, which would restore the power of Congress to regulate money in elections. In an attempt to smear Democrats and the resolution, Cruz claimed that the effort to regulate campaign finance will outlaw satire in America. Specifically, Cruz said that the long-running comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live would be banned from the airwaves and creator Lorne Michaels would be thrown in prison.
According to Cruz, because NBC is a corporation that makes money on a show that does political satire, lawmakers would be able to control it.
Saturday Night Live over the years has had some of the most tremendous political satire, Cruz said. Who can forget in 2008, Saturday Night Lives wickedly funny characterization of the Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin? It was wickedly funny and also [had] a profoundly powerful effect on peoples assessment of Gov. Palin, whos a friend of mine.
Congress would have the power to make it a criminal offense. Lorne Michaels could be put in jail under this amendment for making fun of any politician. That is extraordinary. It is breathtaking and it is dangerous.

I'm absolutely positive that SNL had no profound impact on one's opinion of Sarah Palin...
